KINGSTON, Ont. (February 14, 2016) - The Gaels (11-2-7-2) dropped a 2-0 decision on Sunday afternoon at the Invista Centre to the No.4 Toronto Varsity Blues (11-4-4-3).
The Gaels fired 33 shots at Toronto goaltender Valencia Yordanov but could not put any past the Varsity Blue.Â
GAME FLOWThe Gaels opened the first period controlling much of the offensive play early on. After Toronto found themselves in penalty trouble, Queen's drew a second penalty and had a five on three power play. Yordanov came up strong for Toronto steering aside multiple Gael chances to kill off the penalties.
The Gaels finished the period outshooting Toronto 14-7 and went to the locker room all square at 0-0.
In the second Queen's kept the pressure on early.
Katrina Manoukarakis (Scarborough, Ont.) was finally able to beat Yordanov from the right wing on the short side but could not beat the post and the game remained scoreless.
At the 11:11 mark of the second frame Jacqueline Scheffel was able to chip a shot towards Queen's netminder
Caitlyn Lahonen (Saskatoon) that spun through to the back of the net to give the Varsity Blues a 1-0 lead.
After 40 minutes Queen's had fired 26 shots on goal but Yordanov was up to the task.
In the third it was much of the same for the Gaels. They produced a few scoring opportunities and had a power play chance but could not convert.
Mary Coughlin (Amherstburg, Ont.) pinched in on a rush and fired a shot above the blocker of Yordanov but found the post.
The Gaels pulled Lahonen late in the game but Taylor Day picked up an empty net goal for Toronto to seal the victory.
