NORTH BAY, Ont. (November 27, 2016) - The Queen's Gaels (3-6) lost 3-2 on the road against the Nipissing Lakers (4-3). The close match went to five sets with scores of 25-18, 25-15, 13-25, 22-25 and 15-12 in favour of the Lakers.
GAME FLOW
The first two sets went to Nipissing. In both sets, Queen's trailed the Lakers at the technical timeout. A combined 29 kills for the home team led to the Gaels falling in the first two sets with scores of 25-18 and 25-15.
The Gaels weren't willing to go down without a fight, not letting the Lakers finish the match in a swift three sets. The tricolour opened up the third set with a slight lead, and when Isabelle Korchiski (Anmore, B.C.) stepped up to the service line, the Gaels completely took over the set to score five consecutive points and lead 14-5. A kill from Victoria Wensley (Coquitlam, B.C.) with the assist from Sierra Hardy (Oakville, Ont.) gave the Gaels the third set with a score of 25-13.
Feeling the momentum from the third set, the Gaels walked onto the court with confidence in the fourth. Queen's was able to keep a neck and neck score with the Lakers until the teams were tied 7-7. Both teams staying fairly close in their matchup, with huge kills by Wensley, Caroline Livingston (Kelowna, B.C.) and Isabelle Korchinski (Anmore, B.C.). After Nipissing took an 18-10 lead, Queen's came back to tie the score 21-21. Multiple errors made by the Lakers and a kill from Livingston sealed the set for the Gaels, winning 25-22.
The fifth and final set could have gone to either team, with the teams exchanging points until it was tied 11-11. Two late kills from Nipissing's Shayla Kessler gave the Lakers a 15-12 win in the set and a 3-2 victory.
Livingston had a team-high 13 kills, followed by 11 for Danielle Corrigan (North Vancouver) and 10 kills for Wensley. Three Gaels had double-digit digs, led by Korchinski's 15. Jamie Rosa (Belleville, Ont.) had 13 digs, while Sierra Hardy (Oakville, Ont.) contributed 11 digs and 32 assists.
Kessler and Tracy Hammerton had 18 kills each to go with 17 and 15 digs, respectively, for Nipissing.
