Men's rugby hosts Western in the OUA Semi-Final, plus, Ryerson and Toronto are in town for volleyball. Women's soccer heads off to the OUA Final Four and the rowing team is at the CURA National Championships. Women's hockey is at Brock, then Guelph, and men's hockey has two games in Windsor.

Gaels This Week

GAME OF THE WEEK
MEN'S RUGBY PLAYOFFS
The Gaels play host to the rival Western Mustangs in the Queen's Game of the Week and the OUA Semi-Final on Saturday at 1pm on Nixon Field.

Queen's earned a bye through the first round of the playoffs with a strong 6-1-1 record in the regular season, which placed them second in the OUA standings. To close out the regular season, Queen's beat RMC 45-19, led by two tries from Kainoa Lloyd (Mississauga, Ont.), who just rejoined the tricolour after a stint with the Canada 'A' squad in Uruguay. Even after missing OUA games, Lloyd still finished the regular season with a league-high 10 tries. Joining Lloyd on the Canada 'A' roster was Gaels teammate Lucas Rumball (Toronto). Both players were absent when Queen's visited Western in October, and the teams tied 11-11. Dylan Young (Toronto) stepped up while his teammates were away, finishing the season 10th in OUA scoring, and contributing two of his three penalty goals in the game against the Mustangs.

Western was close on the Gaels heels in the regular season standings, sitting just behind Queen's in third spot with a 5-2-1 record. The Mustangs finished the season with a pair of convincing wins against Laurier and Brock, before getting past RMC 36-22 in the first round of the OUA playoffs. Cole Sopik had two tries in Western's playoff win, and led his team in scoring with nine tries during the regular season.

This year's playoff scenario has a déjà vu feel, with both semi-final matchups a repeat of the 2015 postseason. Last year, Guelph topped McMaster and Queen's defeated Western, which led to the Gaels exciting 24-23 championship victory. Queen's needs to win on Saturday for a chance to defend their OUA title and hoist the Turner Trophy for a fifth straight year.

WOMEN'S SOCCER AT OUA FINAL FOUR
No.7 Queen's starts their OUA Final Four schedule on Friday at 7pm against the host No.6 Western Mustangs.

After a thrilling 1-0 overtime win against a nationally ranked Ottawa team in the OUA Quarter-Finals, the Gaels are headed to the OUA Final Four to compete for a medal and a spot at the U Sports Championship. In the other Semi-Final, No.3 UOIT faces off with the underdog Windsor Lancers, who upset York, the top seed in the West, in penalties to earn their spot. As the #2 seed in the East, Queen's draws the highest remaining team from the West, which is the #2 seeded Mustangs.

In the win against Ottawa, Laura Callender (Ottawa) broke the deadlock after 109 minutes of scoreless soccer at Richardson Stadium with the OUA Play of the Week. After receiving the ball from the wing, Callender shook two Gee-Gee defenders with some great footwork, then dribbled across the face of goal and scored into the bottom right corner. Callender was buzzing all game, and the best chance for the tricolour during regulation as well, but her shot from 30 yards out was tipped onto the crossbar and out of play. Gaels keeper Madison Tyrell (White Rock, B.C.) was perfect on the day, saving all eight shots she faced, including two in extra time.

Western needed extra time and penalties to get by Guelph in their Quarter-Final after 120 minutes of play ended in a 0-0 tie. Megan Girardi showed why she had the lowest goals against average during the regular season, only allowing three goals in nine matches. The Mustang defenders deserve much of the credit for Girardi's stellar numbers, only needing to save one shot in last weekend's win. Jenna White, Sabrina De Nard, Grace Grafham, and Stefanie Di Tella converted their kicks to give Western the 4-2 advantage in penalties. The last time Queen's and Western met in the playoffs was 2013, when the Gaels visited London for an OUA Semi-Final matchup with the Mustangs. Western came out on top in penalties after the teams played through regulation and extra time in a 0-0 draw.

The Gaels need to beat the Mustangs on Friday for a chance to defend their OUA title and book their spot at nationals, which is hosted by Acadia this year and starts on Thursday, November 10. The winner of Friday's game plays at 2pm on Sunday for OUA Gold, while the Bronze Medal Game goes Sunday at 11am.

ROWING AT CURA CHAMPIONSHIP
Members of the Queen's rowing team will be competing at the CURA National Championship this weekend in Welland, Ont., after the women won team silver and the men finished fifth at the OUA Championships last weekend.

On the women's side, Queen's collected silver medals in the heavy 2- (Louise Munro, Caissidy Deane), heavy 2x (Milica Banic, Hayley Watt), lightweight 8+, and the heavy 8+ in St. Catherines, Ont., at the conference championship. The Gaels also collected bronze medals in the women's lightweight 4+ (Skyler Goudswaard, Caroline Krzyszkowski, Jenelle Weidner, Rebecca Hisey, Cox: Katherine de Klerk) and the men's heavy 2x.

The men's heavy 2x of Gavin Stone and Elliot Hall came across the finish in a time of 6:54.546 in their bronze medal performance which was just over five seconds behind the lead and one second behind the silver medalist boat. The women's heavy 8+ of Philippa Goodleaf, Milica Banic, Hayley Watt, Brenna Drummond, Louise Munro, Caissidy Deane, Meredith Adams, Paige Adams and Cox: Khalil Daibes finished nearly nine seconds off a gold medal showing but came away with a silver thanks to their time of 6:32.314. The women's lightweight 8+ of Greta Chase, Madeline Howell, Katie Goguen, Dominique Flabbi, Victoria Fong, Philippa Goodleaf, Caroline Krzyszkowski, Skyler Goudswaard and Cox: Mackenzie Stevenson took silver in a time of 7:04.278 finishing just over 10 seconds back of the first place crew from Western.

The Gaels will look to improve on last year's results at the CURA Championships, where Queen's collected their lone medal with a silver finish in women's 1x.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL
The Gaels women's volleyball team (1-0) will get their first real test of the season this weekend when they host Ryerson (0-2) and No.4 Toronto on Friday and Saturday evening. Both game are set for 6pm in the ARC Main Gym.

Queen's started the regular season last weekend with a single home game against Trent, welcoming the newcomers to the OUA with a 3-0 straight set victory. The Gaels nearly doubled their opponent's kill total, 41 to 21. Leading the tricolour offence was Caroline Livingston (Kelowna, B.C.) with 13 kills, followed by Danielle Corrigan (North Vancouver) with 10 kills and Victoria Wensley with nine. Isabelle Korchinski recorded a team-high 11 digs, while Anna Prust had 10. In addition to her offensive prowess, Livingston also contributed nine digs.

Ryerson lost both of their games to open the 2016-17 regular season, falling 3-0 to Toronto and 3-1 to Western. Perennial All-Star and older sister to Gaels standout Caroline Livingston, Veronica Livingston led her team with 21 kills between the two losses. Julie Longman has 31 digs through the first two games of the year.

Toronto's lone game of the year was the win against Ryerson. The reigning U Sports and OUA Rookie of the Year Alina Dormann started the year off in the same dominant fashion she played with last year, hitting a game-high 15 kills with only three attacking errors, while also contributing nine digs.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
The Gaels men's volleyball team (1-0) is back in action at the ARC on Friday and Saturday at 8pm for games against Ryerson (1-1) and Toronto (0-1).

To start the 2016-17 regular season, Queen's easily got past Trent in their first game at the OUA level. The Gaels held Trent to 9, 10, and 12 points in a 3-0 sweep at home. On an extremely efficient afternoon, Queen's only committed one attacking error on 65 attempts. Local Zac Hutcheson (Kingston, Ont.) had a game-high 10 kills in the win, while rookie Joel Rudd (Cambridge, Ont.) recorded 11 points in his first game with Queen's. Markus Trence (Orangeville, Ont.) and Dylan Hunt (Aurora, Ont.) had eight kills apiece. Jamie Wright (Kingston, Ont.) had 29 of the team's 39 assists.

Ryerson picked up a 3-0 win to start the season against Toronto before losing 3-1 to Western. Lucas Coleman was the go-to hitter for the Rams against Toronto, picking up a game-high 14 kills. Adam Anagnostopoulos had 35 assists for Ryerson, while Will Otten made a game-high 10 digs.

Toronto has played only one game this year, falling in straight sets to Ryerson. Attacking errors cost the Varsity Blues last weekend, as they committed 21 to Ryerson's seven. William Colucci attempted a game-high 32 attacks, collecting a game-high 17 points in the loss.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY
The women's hockey team (3-0-3-0) is on the road this weekend at Brock (2-1-2-1) Friday night and No.5 Guelph (3-1-1-1) Saturday afternoon.

Queen's has split their games all three weekend of the season thus far, including the 3-0 win against Toronto and the 3-1 loss to Guelph last weekend. A pair of second period goals from Addi Halladay (North Augusta, Ont.) sent the Gaels past Toronto, with Megan Farrell (Barrie, Ont.) adding the final goal late in the game. Against Guelph, Emily Jukosky (Stirling, Ont.) opened the scoring for Queen's with a highlight-reel goal in tight on the power-play. Guelph scored three unanswered goals to steal the game from the Gaels.

Brock is level with Queen's in the standings, tied for fifth spot in the OUA with nine points. Leading scorer Christina Leradi netted two goals to help hand No.9 Nipissing their first loss of the year, 3-1 last weekend. Melissa Hurrell was the only Badger to find the back of the net the following day when Brock fell 3-1 to Laurentian.

The Gryphons earned a pair of road wins last weekend, beating Ryerson 4-2 and Queen's 3-1. Kelly Gribbons scored a pair of goals against the Rams, including the game-winner, while Katherine Bailey added a power-play marker in both games. Guelph gave up the first goal in both games on the weekend, but was able to come back and steal two wins.

MEN'S HOCKEY
The Gaels men's hockey team (5-2-1) is in Windsor this weekend for a double-header against the Lancers (5-3-0) Friday and Saturday night.

Queen's lost 5-2 to Waterloo last Friday before topping Laurentian 4-3 in a shootout. Against Waterloo, rookie Graeme Brown (Gananoque, Ont.) scored his first goal as a Gael and Eric Ming (Williamstown, Ont.) continued his stellar season with a goal of his own. In the win against Laurentian, Ming picked up his league-leading eighth goal on his second power-play marker of the season. Warren Steele (Williamsburg, Ont.) scored his first of the year, and Ted Hunt (Toronto) netted his first at the OUA level to round out the Gaels regulation scoring. Spencer Abraham (Campbellville, Ont.) sealed the victory for Queen's on a highlight-reel shootout goal.

Windsor is fresh off a weekend at UQTR, where the Lancers lost 5-3 on Friday and won 6-5 on Saturday. Brennan Feasey notched a goal in both contests, bringing his season total to a team-high five. Rookie defenseman Todd Ratchford leads the team in points on four goals and eight assists, including three helpers last weekend. Ratchford is riding a five-game point streak into this weekend's matchups with the Gaels. The second-highest scoring team in the OUA, Windsor has twice scored six goals in a game, and was held to a season-low two goals only once.
