Gaels get by Guelph in five sets

GUELPH, Ont. (November 19, 2016) - The Queen's Gaels (3-4) defeated the Guelph Gryphons (2-4) in a close match 3-2 Saturday night in Guelph, the scores being 22-25, 25-20, 25-22, 13-25 and 15-13. 

GAME FLOW
The Gaels started the match with a strong lead of 7-3 being thanks to strong serving from Isabelle Korchinski (Anmore, B.C.). The Gryphons called a timeout, after which they took the momentum coming back to tie the score at 18-18. Guelph used the momentum of a couple service and attack errors by the Gaels to finish the set with a score of 25-22. 

The second set began with a huge lead of 7-1 for the Gaels with Danielle Corrigan (North Vancouver) back to serve. Nicola Ros (North Vancouver B.C.) did an excellent job at setting up her players, giving the team 45 assists throughout the game. With a game-high 16 kills in the set, the Gaels came out on top with a score of 25-20. 

The third set began with a big block by Caroline Livingston (Kelowna, B.C.) to set the mood for Queen's.The tricolour performed just as well in the third set as they did in the second, and took advantage of eight Guelph errors to defeat the Gryphons 25-22 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

Unfortunately, the Gryphons were able to take back the fourth set and defeated the Gaels 25-13. Queen's committed an uncharacteristic 13 errors, while only managing eight kills. With the match tied 2-2, the teams would play a fifth and deciding set. 

The final set opened with a service error by the Gryphons. Corrigan responded for Queen's by serving an ace, and the Gaels were able to open up an early lead. The tricolour continued to lead, but tensions were high and the Gryphons called a timeout with the score 10-6 for the Gaels. Immediately following their timeout, Guelph tied up the set at a score of 10-10. After Queen's earned their first match point and were denied, the Gryphons made it 14-13 for the Gaels and Queen's head coach Michael Ling called a timeout. Out of the timeout, Livingston was set up for a huge kill by Ros and the Gaels defeated Guelph 15-13 in the set and took the match 3-2.

Livingston finished with a game-high 20 kills plus 14 digs. Korchinski had 14 kills and a team-high 16 digs for Queen's, while Victoria Wensley (Coquitlam, B.C.) also got to double-digit kills and digs with 10 in both categories. In addition to her 45 assists, Ros also contributed 15 digs. Corrigan had an excellent night from the service line with six aces.

UP NEXT
The Gaels will play next Saturday on the road at noon against the York Lions. The Lions currently sit 3-3 this season.
