GAMES OF THE WEEK
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL HOME OPENER AND GET REAL GAME
The No.7 women's basketball team hosts Laurier Friday at 6pm and Waterloo Saturday at 2pm in the Games of the Week. Both games will be in the ARC Main Gym as the Gaels play their season opener.
Â
The game against Waterloo will also be the Get REAL game, which is a student group that works towards eliminating homophobia and creating a safe space for all. Saturday afternoon's game will also welcome the Kingston Impact.
Â
Queen's won both games on the opening weekend of the OUA regular season, defeating York 85-54 before topping Guelph 63-47.
Robyn Pearson (Toronto) is averaging a double-double so far this year, after impressive outings with 12 points and nine rebounds in 21 minutes against York, then putting up 16 points and 13 rebounds against Guelph. Pearson led the Gaels in both categories against Guelph, but against York, Mariane Alarie (Sudbury, Ont.) and
Katharina Holt (Tiny, Ont.) netted 14 points each.
Emily Hazlett (Fredericton) scored 12 points against Guelph and added five assists.
Â
It will be a battle of unbeaten teams Friday night, with Laurier entering the weekend 3-0 after beating Ryerson to start the season and Algoma twice last weekend. Kaitlyn Schenck leads the Golden Hawks with 17.7 points per game, which is fourth in the OUA. Schenck sits atop the conference in steals with 10 and set a new career-high with 23 points in Laurier's second matchup with Algoma. Irena Rynkiewicz is fifth in rebounds per game with 9.3, compared to Pearson of Queen's, who is third with 11.0.
Â
Waterloo won their only game of the season so far when they hosted Toronto, winning 68-52. Kristen Osborne, Jenel Ulman, and Emily Wilk all had good days for the Warriors with 16, 14, and 13 points, respectively. Wilk had a game-high nine rebounds, while Ulman and Wilk both had six assists each. Waterloo should be well-rested coming into this weekend, not having played in two weeks.
