Sumner wins Gold, Staehli becomes first Queen's Five-Time All-Canadian at U Sports Cross Country

Plains of Abraham, Que. (November 12, 2016) - Claire Sumner finished the U Sports Cross Country national championship in 1st place overall claiming the individual gold medal.

Sumner pushed hard late and passed her teammate Julie-Anne Staehli, who led the most of the race, in the final kilometre. Sumner crossed the finish line in a time of 21:09.3 to finish first. Steahli hung on to take 10th overall in a time of 21:50 to claim a spot on the All-Canadian team. Sumner also takes claim to the U Sports MVP as the top runner. 

Staehli also made history for Queen's as she concludes her career as a Gael as a five-time All-Canadian becoming the first Queen's student to accomplish the feat.
 
As a team, the women claimed a national silver medal. Beatrice Cigagna, Shannen Murray and Lindsay Kary rounded out the Gaels scorers finishing 20th, 21st and 30th respectively in times of 22:38.9, 22:38.9 and 23:00.0.

The men's team finished with an 8th overall showing for Queen's as they entered the championship as the No.10 ranked team in the country showing a two spot improvement.

Eric Wynands led the way for Queen's finishing in 27th at a time of 31:44.4. Rounding out the Gaels top five were Mark Schmidt in 30th, Rob Kanko in 41st, Joey Stel in 59th and Kevin Azocar in 70th.
