No.7 Gaels drop Gryphons 63-47 for second-straight victory

GUELPH, Ont. (November 12, 2016)- The Queen's Gaels No.7 ranked women's basketball team started off their 2016-17 campaign with two straight road victories, capped off with a 63-47 victory over the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday evening.

GAME FLOW
Robyn Pearson (Toronto) led all players with 16 points and 13 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Emily Hazlett (Fredericton, N.B.) added 12 points, shooting 4-of-9 from the field and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free-throw line, and added six boards and a game-high five assists. Veronika Lavergne (Kingston, Ont.) picked up 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting in 15 minutes of court time off the bench for the Gaels, who shot 29.6% (24-81) overall and capitalized off of 23 Gryphon turnovers, converting those into 27 points.
 
Queen's won all four quarters by single digits, slowing Guelph and building their lead throughout the contest. The women held Guelph to a 27.3% shooting efficiency overall, and just nine points in the final quarter of play to secure the victory. The Gaels also out-rebounded the home side 48-39, and shot 15-of-18 from the foul-line.

Sarah Holmes tallied 12 points in a losing cause for the Gryphons.

BY THE NUMBERS
2- The teams combined for just two three-point baskets. Guelph was 2-of-16, while the Gaels were 0-of-15.
30%- Both Queen's and Guelph shot under 30% overall from the field on Saturday
21- The Gaels picked up 21 offensive boards, compared to 13 from the Gryphons

UP NEXT
Queen's returns to Kingston next weekend for their home opening matches at the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC). The Gaels will host Laurier and Waterloo on Friday and Saturday respectively. Friday's game tips off at 6:00 p.m while Saturday will see a 2:00 p.m. start time. Both can be seen live on OUA.tv.
