Trence and Rudd power Gaels past Lancers in 3-0 sweep

KINGSTON, Ont. (November 11, 2016) - The Gaels (3-1) were the quick winners Saturday night at the ARC, defeating the Windsor Lancers (0-3) in three straight sets with scores of 25-19, 23-16, and 25-19.

GAME FLOW
The game opened strong for the Lancers with Windsor taking the first six points of the game. The Gaels called a timeout with the score at 8-4 which led to an advantage for the Gaels. The advantage was led by Joel Rudd's (Cambridge, Ont) fantastic serving efforts and the run finished with a big kill by Rudd taking the score to 8-8. Windsor put up huge blocks not giving the Gaels any easy opportunities for a kill. At the technical timeout Queen's held a 16-15 lead, the Gaels used their momentum from this to create a two point lead and carry themselves to victory. The Gaels took the first set, 25-19.

Queen's opened the second frame on a four point run, and made the opening score 9-3 for the Gaels. Despite the Lancers best efforts, a timeout was called at 10-4 but it was not enough to regain their momentum to catch the Gaels. Markus Trence (Orangeville, Ont.) dominated the set with 10 kills, a huge asset to the Gaels offence. The final score was 25-16 for the tricolour.

The third and final set saw both teams come out to play and the score was a direct reflection of it. The score constantly staying neck and neck, 5-5 and 7-7 neither team wanting to give up much ground.  Again it was Trence and Rudd who dominated the offence with huge kills and blocks up at the net. At a score of 8-7 the Gaels took a timeout and a larger lead, not letting the score get tied up again en route to a final score of 25-19.

FINAL SAY
"Well,  I think we're coming together pretty well as an efficiency of 36% that's pretty good, there were a lot of gaps in their blocking which helped us look good. We hit their seams quite a bit, but the top teams in the league wont present that kind of block so we still need to work on being a bit more disciplined. Overall, I am pretty happy we passed pretty well and Jamie ran a good offence." - Head Coach Brenda Willis
