SUDBURY Ont. (October 23, 2016) – The Gaels (7-5-4) won 2-0 against the Laurentian Voyageurs (6-8-2) in the final game of the regular season, with home field advantage on the line.
A win would keep Queen's in fourth place in the OUA East standings, while a loss would boost Laurentian up to fourth, in position to host the first round of the OUA playoffs.
GAME FLOW
The Gaels played an intense game, ultimately defeating the Voyageurs. In the first half, Queen's fired four of shots at goal and maintained control of the ball well. Five yellow cards were given out in the first half, with
Patrick Van Belleghem (Kenora, Ont.) and
Tonko Bacelic (Mississauga, Ont.) each receiving one for the Gaels. In the 23rd minute of the game, the Gaels took the lead on an unassisted goal from Belleghem.
In the second half five more yellow cards were distributed, with Queen's picking up three of them.
Nicolas Meunier (Lyon, France) picked up two yellow cards within five minutes to be sent out of the game, limiting the Gaels to 10 men from the 62nd minute on. The Laurentian offence stepped up with six shots on net in the seocond half, but they were unable to connect. In the 83rd minute,
Jacob Schroeter (Ottawa) scored the second goal of the game for the Gaels on a penalty kick, before picking up a yellow card two minutes later. The final score was 2-0 for the Gaels.
