TORONTO, Ont. (January 29, 2016) – With a final score of 3-1 (25-23, 14-25, 25-16, 25-23), the No. 8 Gaels (11-3) won their third consecutive game, this time against the Toronto Varsity Blues (8-7) on Friday night on the road in Toronto.
Queen's had big nights from
Marko Dakic (Mississauga, Ont.) who finished with 18 kills and nine digs while
Mike Tomlinson (Stratford, Ont.) added 14 kills and 12 digs. Setter
Jamie Wright (Kingston, Ont.) contributed a game high 49 assists for Queen's while the host Varsity Blues William Colucci led the offence with 18 kills and 13 digs. Aleksa Miladinovic and Andrew Kos each picked up 14 digs for Toronto with Miladinovic also landing two serving aces.
GAME FLOW The Gaels had a strong opening to their night, getting ahead early and forcing the Blues back on their heels. Toronto managed to respond and keep close behind their opponents as the set became a struggle for either team to hold onto a comfortable lead. By the end of the set the Gaels had built up enough momentum to pull off a 25-23 set score to go 1-0 against the Blues.
The Blues put the breaks on the Gaels momentum in the second, bursting onto the court and blowing through the set to tie the match 1-1 off a 25-14 set win. In the third the Gaels regained their composure and increased their efficiency to 0.355, letting only two errors through and keeping Toronto at 16 points.
The final frame was a repeat performance of the first set with Queen's staying just ahead of the Blues. The Gaels ended their night just as they had started it with a 25-23 set score to round out their 3-1 win over Toronto.
