REGINA, SK. (September 25-27, 2015) - The women's volleyball team continues preparation for their upcoming 2015-16 season with their second exhibition tournament in Saskatchewan this weekend at the University of Regina Invitational tournament. The Gaels played three round robin games starting against Brandon University and Winnipeg on Friday, followed by a final round robin game against the University of Alberta on Saturday afternoon. Queen's went 1-2 in the round robin which earned them a matchup against Briercrest in consolation semifinal Saturday evening. The Gaels defeated Briercrest in three straight sets which earned them a match against Brandon on Sunday for the fifth place match. Queen's defeated Brandon 3-1 to finish fifth place overall at the Regina Invitational tournament.
Day 1
QUEEN'S vs. BRANDONThe Gaels opened up the tournament with a matchup against the Brandon Bobcats Friday afternoon. Queen's had no trouble with their Canada West opponent winning in four sets 3-1 with set scores 25-19, 25-17, 22-25 and 27-25. The Gaels took the lead 2-0 in the match and after dropping the third set Brandon put up a challenge to send the match to five but the Gaels held on and took the set and the game in extra points 27-25.
QUEEN'S vs. WINNIPEGQueen's second match on the day at the University of Regina Invitational tournament was against the Winnipeg Wesmen. Winnipeg had lost to Alberta in four sets earlier that day and were looking for their first win in the tournament. The Gaels fell behind dropping the first two sets of the match 25-23 and 25-19. They were able to rebound in set three taking it 25-19 over Winnipeg but the Wesmen closed out the match in the fourth with a 25-18 set for a 3-1 win.
Day 2
QUEEN'S vs. ALBERTAThe Gaels took on the 2-0 Alberta team on Saturday and the Pandas jumped on Queen's and took the match in straight sets. The Gaels fell with set scores of 25-22, 25-15, 25-22 keeping each set close but could not take any off of the Alberta team.
QUEEN'S vs. BRIERCRESTAfter Queen's finished with a 1-2 record in round robin play they earned a matchup in the consolation semifinal Saturday night against Briercrest. The Gaels won three straight sets to win the match with the set scores of 25-13, 25-10, 25-21.
Day 3QUEEN'S vs. BRANDONThe Gaels played Brandon University Sunday morning for the fifth place game. Queen's was victorious in this match winning 3-1 in sets. The first set went the distance with Brandon taking it by a score of 34-32. The Gaels shook off the first set loss and got on a roll winning the next three in a row to win the match, the scores of the sets were 25-17, 25-21 and 25-17. Queen's finished fifth at the Regina Invitational tournament.
