WINDSOR, Ont. (March 6, 2015) - The Queen's Gaels saw their season come to an end as they fell 69-60 to the No.7 Ryerson Rams at the St. Denis Centre in Windsor, Ontario on Friday night in OUA women's basketball.
Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) led the Gaels with 18 points adding seven rebounds while
Abby Dixon (North Vancouver, B.C.) added 12.
Andrea Priamo (Guelph, Ont.) lead the Gaels on the glass hauling in 10 rebounds, with six coming on the offensive end. The Rams saw strong nights from Sofia Paska who finished with 18 points and six rebounds while Cara Tiemens went off for 12 points with five rebounds.
"I thought they did a really good job they had some good runs in the game that we really had some difficulty stopping," said head coach
Dave Wilson after the game. "There were critical opportunities where they made hoops and we had opportunities to bring it back but we missed some opportunities that I thought could have changed that tide. I give them all the credit in the world because I thought their composure was outstanding especially for a team that is as young as they are."
The Rams got off to a quick start in the opening minutes and their leading scorer during the regular season, Keneca Pingue-Giles led the charge picking up a lay-in with the foul which she knocked down giving Ryerson a 5-0 lead. The Gaels responded as
Robyn Pearson (Toronto) pulled up a jumper for the Gaels, their first points of the contest. Veteran
Gemma Bullard (Guelph, Ont.) ignited the Gaels as she sacrificed the body on a ball that was headed out of play to give the Gaels the possession despite falling into the sidelines. Wright had the hot hand for Queen's and she pushed down the baseline for an easy two. Bullard and the Gaels continued their strong defensive game as the Guelph native drew a charge and Wright sunk a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 14-11 at the end of the opening frame.
Queen's kept their momentum going in the second and Dixon knocked down a shot from beyond the arc to even the game at 14-14. From there the Gaels took their first lead of the game when Wright hit a three of her own putting the tricolour in front 17-16. The game continued to go back-and-forth from there, as both teams traded buckets. Late in the half Sofia Paska proved to be a challenge in the post for Queen's and Ryerson finished with an 8-0 run to take a 35-27 lead into halftime. Wright led all scorers at the half with 14 points on 6-13 shooting.
To start the third it was Hazlett in control she got the ball and cut to the hoop for an easy lay-in then took the ball to the hoop again where she was fouled and hit one of the pair bringing the deficit to five. Boag drained a three pointer minutes later and Queen's opened up a 7-0 run to star the quarter. The Rams would not be outdone though and they went down low in the post to Nunes putting together an 8-0 run of their own and taking a 43-34 lead over Queen's. After Queen's pulled close again it was Cara Tiemens who sunk a three to push the Rams lead to double-digits for the first time in the game. She followed that up by closing out the frame with a steal and easy lay-in going nearly the length of the court making it 56-40 Ryerson on a 9-0 run heading into the final frame.
After Ryerson scored the opening three point of the quarter Boag responded with a three pointer. The Gaels needing to cut into the lead, couldn't slow the Rams who were able to draw fouls and collect easy points early on. Queen's began to slow chip away at the Rams lead which reached 19 early in the fourth quarter, Wright found the hoop with a jumper at the four minute mark cutting the deficit to 13. Dixon followed up with a three then got to the line on a fast break hitting one of two to make the lead only nine. Hazlett picked up a steal to go the full-length of the court cutting the score to 67-60 with just over a minute remaining. That would be as close as they Gaels would get as the Rams stayed ahead taking the win 69-60.
"It's been the same all season, in fact in all their careers," continued Wilson. "In the second half she (Boag) came out like gangbusters and just knew that she wasn't going to go out without a fight. Certainly Jenny and Gemma are the same, solid players that give others confidence around them."
Ryerson will now advance to the OUA Championship where they will meet the host Windsor Lancers tomorrow night at 6pm.
