GUELPH, Ont. (February 7, 2015) - The Gaels (12-8) finished out their regular season with a 3-1 victory over Guelph (9-11) on the road on Saturday night thanks to strong performances from both
Mike Tomlinson (Stratford, Ont.) and
Jamie Wright (Kingston, Ont.).
Tomlinson finished with 19 points, nine digs and five blocks in the win while Wright fed the attack with his 46 assists while adding eight digs and an ace. Guelph saw a strong performance from Patrick Strzalkowski who had 19.5 points thanks to his 17 kills.
In the first set Queen's looked like they were going to walk away with things to start opening up an 11-3 lead over Guelph. The Gryphons slowly chipped away at the Gaels lead and eventually squared the set at 23-23. After a Guelph error Tomlinson stood strong at the net with a block to give the Gaels the set.
After finding themselves up 17-11 in the second set Guelph once again managed to climb back into the set. Down 21-20 Queen's offence stalled committing four straight attack errors to give Guelph the set.
The third set saw the two teams stay close throughout the set. Ahead 23-21 Queen's turned to
Scott Brunet (Calgary) and Tomlinson for a pair of kills to close things out and put the Gaels on the cusp of victory.
Queen's was simply dominant to start the fourth, the Gaels rallied off seven straight points to go up 7-0 behind three kills from
Markus Trence (Orangeville, Ont.). Wright served an ace for Queen's to bring the set to 19-5 for Queen's and
Aaron Nusbaum closed out the set and the match with a kill for the Gaels.
Queen's will now advance to the OUA playoffs, their opponent and final seeding will be determined after tomorrow's matchups.Â
