TORONTO (February 15, 2015) - The Queen's Gaels suffered a tough loss to the York Lions 3-1 to end their 2014-15 season on Sunday night at York University. Final set scores for the match finished 19-25, 25-22, 29-27 and 25-20.
On the night the Gaels were led by
Mike Tomlinson (Stratford, Ont.) who finished with a team high 18 kills and 22 points while
Scott Brunet (Calgary) had five kills and five blocks. The Lions were led by a strong performance from Josh Henderson who had 22 kills, seven blocks and 27.5 points.
Queen's got off to a strong start in the opening set pulling ahead 5-2 early on before finishing with a 16-10 advantage at the technical timeout. From there the Gaels pushed forward getting kills from Tomlinson and Goyer who also chipped in a block. Lions errors pushed the set in the Gaels favour as they finished with the 25-19 win.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair with neither team able to pull ahead by more than three points. With the Gaels leading 21-19 late in the set and looking to put the Lions down 2-0 York battled back with six of the final seven points to take the set 25-22, finishing things off with a service ace from Logan Mend. The third set saw much of the same as the two teams went to extra points after York halted the Gaels lone set-point attempt. In the end the Lions attack was too much and they took a 2-1 lead thanks to the 29-27 set win.
After the Lions rattled off four straight points the Gaels responded in kind to open the fourth set at 4-4. The Lions pulled ahead however with leads of 15-11 and 21-14 putting Queen's in a difficult position as they looked to push the match to five sets. The Gaels were able to reach the 20 point mark in the set but it was too little too late as York finished off the Gaels 25-20 for the four set win.
The Gaels see their season come to a close with the loss while the Lions will head to the OUA Final Four hosted by the McMaster Marauders next weekend in Hamilton.
The match was originally supposed to have been played on Saturday afternoon but was moved to Sunday evening after a power outage at the York University campus.
