Gaels fall to Lancers in four sets

WINDSOR, Ont. (February 1, 2015) – This Sunday the Gaels (11-7) were defeated by the Windsor Lancers (8-10) in three sets to one with set scores, 22-25, 25-22, 22-25 and 22-25.

In the first set the Lancers got the first point on the board but the Gaels quickly responded with a kill by Philippe Goyer (Ottawa).  Windsor took an early six-point lead over Queen's as their attacks were making it through the Gaels defense.  Queen's stepped up their attack and with four consecutive points they managed to tie up the set 21-21.  Unfortunately two back-to-back attacking errors by the Gaels gave the Lancers the set 22-25.

Once again Goyer opened the scoring for the Gaels in the second set but Windsor returned with an equalizer.  The play went back and forth between the two teams, as neither was able to get more than a few points lead on their opponent.  With the set tied up at 21-21, two attacking errors by the Lancers and two powerful attacks by Goyer gave the set to Queen's, 25-22.

In the third set we saw similar play as both teams were exchanging points and neither managed to take more than a few points of a lead.  The Gaels put forward a strong attacking effort but the Lancers' defense was able to deal with it and respond with some of their own attacks.  Both teams exchanged service errors near the end of the set but a kill by Windsor player Adam Thompson gave the Lancers the set, 22-25.

In the final frame, the Lancers opened the scoring but Queen's managed to get an edge over Windsor as they took an early lead.   The Lancers fought hard and overtook Queen's three-point lead for their own.  The Gaels tied the set up again at 17-17 from an attacking error by a Windsor player.  The end of the set came down to the wire but ultimately the Lancers capitalized on Queen's attacking errors and managed to solidify the win with two back-to-back kills, 22-25.

The top scorers in todays match were Windsor players, Gabriel Burclau with 16 kills and Greg Simone with 18 kills and two serving aces.  For Queen's the leading scorers were Philippe Goyer with 13 kills, two serving aces and four digs and Mike Tomlinson (Stratford, Ont.) with nine kills, one serving ace and 11 digs.  Despite the loss, Scott Brunet (Calgary, Alta.) led the Gaels defense with six strong solo blocks and one assisted block.

The Gaels are back in action next Friday at 8pm as they take on the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton.
