Queen's Athletics & Recreation mourns the loss of Alex Melvin

Queen's football hall of fame builder Alex Melvin passed away in his sleep on Thursday December 24th, at the age of 67.

Melvin was a dual sport athlete in football and hockey, and was recently inducted into the Queen's Football Hall of Fame on September 11th, 2015 as a builder.  Alex joins his father Dr. James Melvin, known as "Doc" to the team, who was also inducted as a builder for his time serving as team doctor in the 1960s.

Alex was an integral member of the Queen's Football Club and beloved by all generations of athletes, parents and supporters.  Known as the "ultimate booster's booster", Melvin was an unwavering positive force behind all things Queen's football. His support of the program as a fundraiser, 'tailgate organizer supreme', and general cheerleader in cloudy times has deep roots in his family. He played football for the Gaels from 1971 on through 1973 where the Gaels finished with a 14-9 record over that period.  During the winter months, Melvin also suited up for the Gaels varsity hockey team and continued his involvement in the program as a fan and supporter attending hockey events over many decades.

Melvin who was President, CANNEX Financial Exchanges, was a member of the Fields & Stadium Campaign Cabinet since its inception in 2006, and responsible for the revitalization of all outdoor athletic facilities at Queen's.

He was known for his gregarious and positive energy that he brought to all things, an ultimate gentleman and proud ambassador of Queen's and our Athletics programs.

Our deepest sympathies to his wife Wendy and the entire Melvin family.  The service for Alex Melvin will be held at the McEachnie Funeral Home in Ajax at 28 Old Kingston Rd , Ajax , On, L1T 2Z7.

Visitation begins Tuesday December 29 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. The funeral will be on Wednesday December 30th at 2pm at the McEachnie Funeral Home in Ajax.
