Former Gael Rugby Player Dave Lougheed Inducted into the Rugby Ontario Hall of Fame

KINGSTON, Ont. (November 9, 2015) - Former Queen's Gael Rugby Player Dave Lougheed is being inducted into the Rugby Ontario Hall of Fame this weekend on November 14th at the Maple Banquet Hall and Event Centre in Mississauga.

Dave Lougheed was a member of the Gaels men's rugby team from 1987 to 1991. He was named an OUA All-Star three times in '88, '90 and '91. Dave received the Jenkins Award in 1990 which is one of oldest trophies at Queen's. It was presented first by Thomas Jenkins in 1930 and is awarded annually to a Varsity Team male athlete in his 4th or 5th year who best displays qualities of scholastic achievement, competitiveness, leadership, sportsmanship, dedication and exceptional contributions to his team.

"Dave was an incredible player during his time at Queen's. His contributions as a Rugby Gael have only been outdone by his commitment as a Queen's Rugby Alumnus." – former coach Herb Steacy

Dave's rugby career expanded beyond Queen's athletics as he played club rugby for the Toronto Welsh and Balmy Beach.  Professionally he played for three years over in England with the Leicester Tigers from 1998 to 2000 and the Gloucester Rugby team in 2000.

"From a Queen's perspective he is probably the most successful athlete from Queen's that I know of." mentioned by former coach Al Ferguson. "My time as Dave's coach and friend to this day, is more about the latter than the former. I have huge respect for Dave as an athlete but more importantly as a person. We did actually have some more naturally talented rugby players in my time, but Dave was the epitome of Queen's Rugby, much more about team than himself. A leader partially as a consequence of his talent but more in view of his commitment to the team, hard work and continual improvement. Dave might be the first to tell you that he inherited a huge part of this from Queen's Rugby, but he certainly proudly continued the tradition."

Provincially and Nationally Dave represented both Ontario and Canada. Lougheed played for Ontario for twelve years from 1987 to 1998 and were National Champs in 1995 and 1996. For Canada Dave debuted in 1990 against Argentina, he recorded 34 caps between 1990 and 2003. He represented Canada at three World Cups in 1995, 1999 and 2003. Dave also took part in two World Cup Sevens in 1993 and 1997.

Former teammate Brad Greenwood commented "It was a pleasure and privilege to play along-side Dave Lougheed during our time at Queen's Rugby.  Dave is the consummate "rugby man" and has continually given back to the game through coaching, sponsorship, and of course his years of service representing Canada on the international stage as a world class player. At Queen's Dave was an exceptional player and he continues to be a great ambassador to Queen's Rugby. I am proud to call him a friend and teammate and on behalf of all Queen's Rugby alumni would like to pass on congratulations for this incredibly well deserved honour of being inducted into the Rugby Ontario hall of Fame."

Current Queen's men's rugby head coach Gary Gilks offered his congratulations, "I would like to congratulate Dave on his induction into the Rugby Ontario Hall of Fame! Dave has been an inspiration to many rugby players/coaches at Queen's over the past decades and remains a big contributor to the sport of rugby both on and off the pitch. I first met Dave in 1990 and was instantly impressed with his work ethic and attitude towards the details of the sport.  I was fortunate to see Dave play for Queen's, and later Canada, and noticed instantly the impact/presence he brought to the game and was always raising the bar for himself and his teammates. Dave's' contributions to rugby have been immense and he was a key component to building a strong program at Queen's that continues today as we strive to  maintain a high standard of performance in our athletes both on and off the field of play. Congrats again Dave!"
