WATERLOO, Ont. (November 28, 2015)-
Sukhpreet Singh recorded a game-high 33 points, and the Queen's Gaels men's basketball team remained unbeaten on the road in the regular season, defeating the Waterloo Warriors 86-81 on Saturday evening.
The Toronto native continued from where he left off one night before, where he recorded 19 points in a victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks, shooting a formidable 12-of-22 from the field, which included two three-point baskets, and draining 7-of-10 attempts from the free-throw line.
Ryall Stroud (Toronto) and
Andrew Mavety (Vancouver, B.C.) chipped in 12 points each, while
Patrick Street (Etobicoke, Ont.) added 11 for the Gaels, who improve to 6-1 on the season and sit first in the OUA East division heading into the holiday break. The Warriors, who were led by a 22-point performance by Mike Pereira, fall to 1-6 and currently stand fourth in the OUA West.
GAME FLOWAfter taking a seven-point lead into halftime, Queen's had its lead threatened by the hosts late in the third quarter. The Warriors went on a 7-0 streak, capped with a three-point basket by Kristian Vande Kemp that cut the Gaels advantage to just a single point. A jump shot bucket by Singh helped the Gaels maintain a small margin heading into the final quarter of play. Then, with the men holding onto their small lead, Singh caught fire in the fourth, nailing four shots in a row, including a three-pointer, to help Queen's stay in front of a stingy Waterloo squad that came alive offensively in the second half.
With just over two minutes remaining in regulation, Mavety drained a big three-pointer that pushed the Gael lead up to eight points, and seemed to take the wind out of the host's sails. Singh and Mavety combined to make 5-of-6 free throws in the final minute of the contest to put the game on ice and give Queen's it's sixth victory of the season.
