Jenny Wright recorded a game-high 20 points, and the Gaels women's basketball team defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs 61-51 on Friday evening at Ben Avery Gym, improving their regular season record to 2-0.
GAME FLOWWright (Kingston, Ont.) shot just under 50% from the field (8-17), while
Robyn Pearson tallied a formidable 18 rebounds, easily the highest total on the glass between both teams. Pearson, a fourth-year Toronto native, added seven points, while
Emily Hazlett (Fredericton, N.B.) and
Abby Dixon (North Vancouver, B.C.) basketed nine points each to help the Gaels remain undefeated early in the conference schedule. Danielle Harris led the Voyaguers (0-2) with 15 points, and Rachel McLean picked up 14 in a losing cause.
After the Gaels took a 10-point lead into halftime and held onto that lead throughout most of the third quarter, the Voyageurs responded with a mini-streak to bring the deficit down to five heading into the final quarter of play. The hosts continued to streak in the early part of the fourth, pulling even with the Gaels twice in the first five minutes of the period. With the scored tied at 47-47 midway through the fourth, the Gaels responded with a 12-0 run that negated Laurentian's comeback hopes. The Voyageurs offence was stalwarted for over four minutes, until a three-pointer with 45 seconds remaining finally broke their slump. By that point, however, the Gaels had re-built their significant advantange, and went on to the victory.
UP NEXTThe Gaels will look for their third straight victory to begin the regular season on Saturday evening when they head to North Bay to take on the Nipissing Lakers. Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m. Queen's returns to the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) next weekend when they host McMaster and Brock.
