KINGSTON, Ont. (October 30, 2015) – The Gaels (0-2) fell to the Ryerson Rams (2-0) in three straight sets this Friday night in their OUA Home Opener.
GAME FLOWThe Gaels opened up the first set with an ace from
Makayla Keith (Calgary) but Ryerson didn't waste any time catching them and grabbing the lead at 4-3. The Rams would hold onto that lead for the rest of the set with Veronica Livingston leading the Rams with 6 kills in the 25-18 set.
Shannon Hopkins (North Vancouver) was a powerhouse for the Gaels matching Livingston in kills in the first set.
Isabelle Korchinski (Anmore, B.C.) led the Gaels with four kills in the second, giving them the edge they needed to keep right on Ryerson's heels. The two teams traded leads throughout the set with the Gaels grabbing their biggest lead of the game mid-way through. However, the Rams managed to stay ahead, and despite a last minute push from Queen's, Ryerson headed into the final frame 2-0, winning the set 25-21.
The third set opened like the first two with the Gaels getting in front early and trading leads with Ryerson for the first half of the set. Again, Ryerson pulled away by the technical timeout mark, heading into the second half of the set leading the Gaels and quickly making it within 3 points of taking the match. The Gaels pulled out all the stops and hit a five point run, but Livingston shut it down for the Rams who took the final set 25-20.
The Gaels were led across the board by
Shannon Neville (Cambridge, Ont.) who put down 11 kills and picked up 16 digs. Hopkins was close behind with nine kills and 14 digs in the match. The Rams had a big night from Livingston with 15 kills, 11 digs and 16.5 total points as well as Theanna Vernon who picked up a 0.611 percentage off 11 kills.
