MONTREAL, QC (October 2, 2015) - The Queen's Women's Hockey team looked to exact revenge on McGill after a loss in the Invitational tournament just two weeks ago.It was a fast and fierce Martlets offence that proved to be the difference as the Gaels were heavily outshot for most of the game at McConnell Arena in Montreal. McGill fired a whopping 19 shots at the Queen's goaltender
Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.), luckily for the visitors she was on her game and stopped 17 of those pucks, with the Martlets goal being scored by forward Melodie Daoust.
The second frame was more of the same, as Queen's was on their heels once again, as McGill potted one 40 seconds in, a strike by Gabrielle Davidson.
Micaela Smith (Cobourg, Ont.) would have something to say about that though, as 12 minutes later she scored the Gaels' first marker cutting the team's deficit in half. Just five minutes later, and with the pressure continuing, the Martlets netted their third of the game, a goal by Shana Walker.
The girls from Montreal continued the pressure as the final period began, scoring two quick ones in the first four minutes to put them up by a score of 4-1. The Gaels wouldn't let up as they fired back quickly with a couple of their own. First, with a goal by
Jessica Wakefield (Lucan, Ont.), and another just moments later from
Addi Halladay (North Augusta, Ont.). Despite outshooting their opponents for the first period in the game, Queen's wasn't able to slow down the rabid McGill offence. Daoust scored her third of the game, completing the hat-trick, and Stefanie Pohlod added oen of her own as well.
The Gaels fell 7-3 to the Martlets, Lahonen turned away 35 shots in the loss. They now move on to Ottawa for Saturday's game, their final exhibition matchup of 2015. The Women kick off their regular season at home on October 9th versus the Brock Badgers.
