TORONTO (October 16, 2015)- The Queen's Gaels women's hockey team had their two-game win streak to begin the regular season snapped on Friday evening at Varsity Arena, falling by a count of of 2-1 in a shootout to the No.6 Toronto Varsity Blues.
GAME FLOWAfter two scoreless periods, third-year forward
Kyla Crouse (Mount Brydges, Ont.) broke the stalemate with her first goal of the season to put the Gaels up 1-0 just 45 seconds into the final period.
Courtenay Jacklin (Regina, Sask.) and
Mary Coughlin (Amherstburg, Ont.) picked up assists on the first goal of the contest, which carried the Queen's to the 16:41 mark of the third before Toronto's Sonja Weidenfelder evened the contest, forcing overtime and eventually the shootout.
All three of Queen's shooters were unable to beat Toronto netminder Valencia Yordanov, while Queen's goalie
Caitlyn Lahonen (Saskatoon, Sask.) stopped her first two shooters but was unable to deny Taylor Day, who gave the Blues a home victory.
Lahonen turned aside 33 of 34 shots in the loss, while Queen's managed 25 shots on the evening. The Gaels improve their point streak to three games.
UP NEXTThe Gaels will return to the ice on Saturday afternoon when they take on the Ryerson Rams at Mattamy Athletic Centre. Puck-drop is set for 2:30 p.m.
