Gaels fall to No.6 Ottawa Gee-Gees in three sets

OTTAWA (January 31, 2015) – This Saturday the Gaels (11-6) fell to the No.6 Ottawa Gee-Gees (13-3) in three straight sets, 25-14, 25-18 and 25-19.

In the first set the Gee-Gees opened the scoring and took an early 10-point lead that the Gaels broke with a kill from first year player Makayla Keith (Calgary).  Despite Queen's best efforts, Ottawa managed to maintain the 10-point lead to take the first set from the Gaels, 25-14.

The Gaels took their first lead of the afternoon as they put the first points on the board in the second set by capitalizing on two back-to-back Gee-Gees attacking errors.  Queen's stepped up the pressure and both teams stayed neck and neck until the 14-point mark where Ottawa managed to create some space for themselves with two kills from Gee-Gee player Myriam English.  The Gaels fought hard to defend against Ottawa but five consecutive points for the Gee-Gees put the set out of reach for Queen's with the set score 25-18.

In the final set the Gee-Gees opened the scoring but Gaels outside Caroline Livingston (Kelowna, B.C.) quickly answered back with a kill to tie the game.  Ottawa took a slight lead early on in the set but Queen's managed to tie it up at 16-16 with a service ace from Livingston.  Once again the Gee-Gees pulled ahead and finished the set with four consecutive points to end the match in three sets, 25-19.

The top scorer in todays match was Ottawa player Myriam English with 14 kills, one serving ace and seven digs.  For the Gaels Brett Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.) led the scoring with seven kills and seven digs.  Livingston also had a strong match for Queen's contributing three kills and one serving ace.

The Gaels are back in action as they hit the road next Friday to take on the McMaster Marauders at 6pm.
