LONDON, Ont. (January 31, 2015) –
Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) led all scorers with 35 points in the Gaels (9-5) 86-72 victory against the Western Mustangs (5-10) on Saturday night in London.
For Wright it was a career night as she reached the 30-point mark for the first time in her career and established a new career high of 35 points. Wright was only two points off the Gaels women's basketball mark for points in a game set by Claire Meadows back in 2005.
After Wright, the Gaels had strong performances from
Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.) with 19 points and
Abby Dixon (North Vancouver) with 12 points and five rebounds.
The Mustangs were led by Maddy Horst who scored 23 points and Caroline Wolynski who scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
The Gaels set the bar high in the first quarter hitting an 11-2 run straight from the tip-off and scoring 24 points over the 13 points scored by the Mustangs. It was see-saw action throughout the second quarter as both teams matched each other in baskets with the Mustangs shrinking their deficit to 41-30 at halftime.
In the second half the Gaels increased their shooting percentage to 60%, pulling farther ahead of the Mustangs with a comfortable 59-43 lead going into the final quarter.
Western began to break down the Gaels defensive play in the last minutes of the game, finding their way to the basket multple times and outscoring Queen's by two points. However, the Gaels had gained too much ground in the first three quarters of play for Western to recover and with a buzzer beating three pointer from Wright, they wrapped up their road weekend with the 86-72 win.
On February 7 the Gaels will be on the road again to go head-to-head with the No. 8 McMaster Marauders in OUA action. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 pm in Hamilton, Ontario.
