LONDON, Ont. (January 31, 2015) – This Saturday the Gaels (11-6) fell to the Western Mustangs (9-8) in four sets, 18-25, 25-19, 25-21 and 25-13.
In the first set the Mustangs opened the scoring but the Gaels quickly responded with a kill from
Tyler Scheerhoorn (Belleville, Ont.). The set was tied up until the eight-point mark where Queen's took a solidified lead as they pushed ahead of Western with six consecutive points.
Markus Trence (Orangeville, Ont.) finished the first set for the Gaels with an unstoppable kill, 25-18.
Western opened the scoring in the second set and took an early lead over the Gaels. Despite Queen's best efforts, the Mustangs capitalized on the Gaels attacking errors and played a very strong defensive game to overtake Queen's 25-19.
In the third set the Gaels opened the scoring with back-to-back kills from Trence and
Mike Tomlinson (Stratford, Ont.). The Mustangs managed to get an edge on the Gaels as they took a four-point lead but attacking efforts from Tomlinson tied the set up at 14-14. Unfortunately, Western succeeded in capitalizing on Gaels attacking errors as they took the set 25-21.
In the final set Western came out flying, taking an early eight-point lead as the Gaels had difficulty breaking through the Mustangs defence. Queen's pushed forward but their attacking efforts weren't enough as Western was succeeding on points from all angles of the court. Mustangs player Doug Austrom ended the match with a kill, 25-13.
The top scorer in todays match was
Markus Trence with 16 kills and four digs for the Gaels. Close behind was Tomlinson with 10 kills, two serving aces and four digs.
The Gaels are back in action tomorrow afternoon as they take on the Windsor Lancers at 3pm in Windsor.
