Gaels grab 75-74 final shot comeback win against Western

LONDON, Ont. (January 31, 2015) – The Gaels (5-9) came back from a 17 point deficit at the end of the first quarter to win 75-74 against the Western Mustangs (9-6) this Friday night in London.

Patrick Street (Etobicoke, Ont.) was the leading scorer with 23 points followed immediately by Greg Faulkner (Kingston, Ont.) who contributed 22 points of his own to the Gaels winning score. The Mustangs were led by Anthony Spiridis with 20 points and nine rebounds as well as Greg Morrow with 17 points.

The Gaels scored the first two points of the game but the Mustangs immediately answered and grabbed the lead which they would hold onto until the final seconds of play. Western dominated the first quarter with airtight defence preventing the Gaels from scoring more than three points while they scored 20 points of their own. The Gaels offence improved in the second quarter as they managed to outscore the Mustangs 26-22 but still were down 42-29 at halftime.

The Mustangs exploded into the third quarter with their momentum driving them forward to claim a game high 24 point lead and score the Gaels 9-2 from the charity stripe.

The Gaels headed into the final frame trailing by 17 points. It was in the last minutes of play that the Gaels found their defensive rhythm to shut down the Mustangs offensive attacks, shrinking the gap to a one-point Western lead with less than a minute left of regulation time. The Mustangs struggled to stay ahead until the end but Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto) found a lane with seconds on the clock and with a buzzer beating layup shot the Gaels finished off with a 75-74 win.

The Gaels will be on the road to Hamilton, Ontario next weekend when they play the No. 4 McMaster Marauders at 2:00 pm on February 7.
