Holmberg picks up 100th regular season win as No.5 Gaels drop UOIT 5-2

OSHAWA, Ont. (January 29, 2015) - The No.5 women's hockey team scored five straight goals as they defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks 5-2 Thursday night on the road in Oshawa.

The Gaels opened the first frame with goals from Chelsea Verbeek (Beiseker, Alta.), Addi Halladay (North Augusta, Ont.) and Michele Knecht (North York, Ont.) to grab the 3-0 advantage. The tallies registered by Verbeek and Knecht were their firsts of the season.

Queen's padded their lead in the middle period as captain Shawna Griffin (Redwood Meadows, Alta.) buried back-to-back powerplay markers. The Ridgebacks cut into the lead with a couple of goals but could not overcome the deficit that had been established by Queen's.

Final shots for the night totalled 26-15 in favour of UOIT. Goaltender Stephanie Pascal (Sudbury, Ont.) started in net for the Gaels, earning the 24 save victory while Cassie Charette and Tori Campbell of UOIT combined for the 10 save loss.

Gaels head coach Matt Holmberg registered his 100th regular season victory with the win and the Gaels have now officially secured a playoff spot.

The No.5 Gaels (14-4-2) return to action February 7 when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks (11-4-4). Puck drop is set for 3:30pm at the Memorial Centre.
