Team effort allows Gaels to cruise past Rams in final home game 3-0

KINGSTON, Ont. (January 25, 2015) - The Queen's Gaels (11-5) had no trouble taking down the Ryerson Rams (11-4) in straight sets in their final regular season home game at the ARC main gym. Set scores finished 25-8, 25-19 and 25-16 for the Gaels.

Four Gaels finished with double-digit point totals as Shannon Neville (Cambridge, Ont.), Niki Slikboer (Seagrave, Ont.), Katie Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.) and Brett Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.) all completed the feat with 12, 11, 10 and 10 points respectively. Ali Shamie (Toronto) was a key contributor setting up the attack all across the floor and finishing with 31 assists.

The Rams were led by Jena Bonello who finished with seven points and a 0.417 attack efficiency.

The Gaels got off to a fast start in the opening set with stretches of three and seven straight points. A Brett Hagarty ace made it 8-3 and a 13-3 advantage forced Ryerson into a timeout. Shamie picked up 13 assists in the first set feeding the Gaels attack all over the court. The Gaels finished off the first set with ease after a Neville for a 25-8 win. Eight points is the lowest set total that the Rams have had so far this season.

The Second set saw the Rams put forth a better effort staying with the Gaels early. With the set tied at 12-12 it was a Charlotte Illingworth (Ottawa) cross-court kill followed by a Brett Hagarty kill to put Queen's ahead. From there it was the Gaels rookie outside hitter Caroline Livingston (Kelowna, B.C.) with a pair of big kills to give the Gaels an advantage late as she showed off her skills to older sister Veronica who plays for Ryerson. Caroline Livingston's third kill of the set finished off the Rams 25-19 give Queen's a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the final set Queen's kept the pedal down on the Rams getting out to an early 7-4 lead. The Gaels then later launched ahead on a six point run with three of the points coming off of Neville kills to lead at the technical timeout 16-7. Steady play allowed the Gaels to be successful to close out the match as the Rams had trouble not only with their attacks but their serving game as well. Makayla Keith (Calgary) closed the match out for Queen's with a service ace to claim the third set 25-16 for the tricolour.

With the win the Gaels now improve to 11-5 on the season and sit tied with the Rams for third with 22 points each in the crowded OUA East.

The Gaels honoured their senior players in their last regular season home game of the season. Emilie Normand, Alexa Scarcello, Shannon Hopkins and Katie Hagarty were all given recognition prior to the match as the Gaels seniors.

Up next for Queen's they will travel to Ottawa to take on the Gee-Gees on Saturday, January 31 at 2pm in their lone game of the weekend.
