Gaels defeat No.9 Ryerson Rams in a 3-0 sweep

KINGSTON, Ont. (January 25, 2015) – The Gaels (11-5) had no trouble upsetting one of the best teams in Canada as they defeated the No.9 Ryerson Rams (12-4) in a three set sweep on Sunday at the ARC.

The Rams opened the scoring in the first set with an unexpected quick tip over the net.  The two teams went back and forth exchanging powerful kills to keep the scoring even.  Queen's pulled away from Ryerson at the eight-point mark where the Gaels pushed through the Rams defence.  Ryerson managed to get back in the game as they closed down a six-point gap but two back-to-back kills by Philippe Goyer (Ottawa) ended the close set 25-23.

Mike Tomlinson (Stratford, Ont.) opened the scoring in set two with a tip over the Ryerson block.  Once again the scoring went back and forth between the two teams right up until the 23-point mark as neither could get more than a two point lead on the other.  Two key attacks by Tyler Scheerhoorn (Belleville, Ont.) brought the set to game point for the Gaels and Goyer finished it off for Queen's with a powerful kill at 25-23.

In the final set, Ryerson got the first point on the board due to a serving error by the Gaels.  Scott Brunet (Calgary, Alta.) lit it up on both offence and defence as he led Queen's in taking an early three-point lead over the Rams. The Gaels managed to slowly edge out Ryerson by extending their lead to six points as Tomlinson snuck a touch over the net. At the end, four attacking errors by the Rams put the match at game point for the Gaels and once again senior player Goyer finished the match with a kill, 25-18.

The top scorer in this afternoon's match was Ryerson player, Robert Worjcik, with 14 kills for the Rams. Goyer and Tomlinson led the scoring for Queen's as Goyer finished with 11 kills and Tomlinson with 11 kills and one serving ace. The Gaels defence was on point as they shut the Rams down with a total of six team blocks and 45 digs to keep the play going.

Queen's honoured their two graduating athlete's prior to the game as both Goyer and Aaron Nusbaum received recognition.

The Gaels are back in action next weekend when they hit the road to play Western on Saturday at 2pm in London.
