Gaels This Week - Men's and Women's Soccer host Trent on Sunday

The Queen's Gaels are in action on numerous fronts this weekend. Here's a rundown of when and where to catch your Gaels in action at home, or how to follow them on the road.

Game of the Week
Men's and Women's Soccer: Women's and men's soccer host Trent this Sunday on Miklas-McCarney Field at 1pm and 3:15pm in the game of the week. When the Gaels faced Trent on the road two weeks ago, the men's team won 1-0 with a rocket of a free-kick from captain Chris Michael (Ottawa), and the women played to a nail-biting 0-0 draw. Last weekend, Jackie Tessier (Winnipeg) claimed the Gaels women's soccer all-time scoring title, scoring the 54th goal of her Queen's career against Toronto. Michael will be back for the men's game on Sunday, fresh off serving a suspension for a red card he received last weekend against Toronto.
Saturday, the Gaels will be on the road to Oshawa to take on UOIT. The Gaels hosted UOIT two weeks ago, with the men's team collecting a 1-0 win, while the women's team fell 1-0 in their first loss of the season to the No.5 Ridgebacks. Robert Lannan (Port Williams, N.S.) will be back for Saturday's game after serving a one game suspension for a straight red card he received against Ryerson, while Michael will miss Saturday's game due to his red card. Other players will have to step up to fill Michael's spot on Saturday, as the Gaels showcase their depth. The women's team, coming off a high scoring shutout against Toronto last Sunday, will look to continue their new winning streak.

Football: This weekend the Gaels will travel to Hamilton to take on the No.4 Marauders at 1pm on Saturday at McMaster's homecoming. Last weekend, the Gaels faced a tough loss against No.6 Guelph, falling 66-0. The Gryphons scored early and were able to hold the Gaels offence off the board. Highlighting Queen's defensive efforts was defensive lineman Derek Wiggan (Toronto), who finished with five solo tackles, all coming for losses, two sacks, and a fumble recovery. Wiggan is now the Gaels all-time leader in tackles for losses, with 36 in his career, and moves into third place for most QB sacks in a career at Queen's. With 22 completions last weekend, Billy McPhee moves into second for most passes completed in a Gaels career, passing Tom Denison. Last season, Queen's defensive back Yann Dika-Balotoken stole the show, as the Gaels beat the Marauders 31-24. Dika-Balotoken returned two second half interceptions for touchdowns, the first of which was 99 yards, and the second was 70 yards. Queen's will be looking for someone to have a breakout performance this weekend, as the Gaels hope to repeat last year's results and get their season back on track.

Women's Rugby: The Gaels host Trent on Nixon Field Saturday at 1pm on Saturday. Last week the Gaels traveled to Toronto, shutting out the Varsity Blues in an 81-0 victory. With a quick start the game, Lauren McEwen (Wasaga Beach, Ont.) put the first try and conversion on the board in the fifth minute. McEwen continued to lead the Gaels, finishing with a total of three tries and seven conversions. Queen's showcased their depth in the dominant win, with nine different players getting on the scoresheet. A strong Trent team will give the Gaels a challenge this weekend at home. McEwen will also look to establish a new team record for points scored in a career as she sits one shy of the record.

Men's Rugby: This weekend the Gaels head to Hamilton to play the McMaster Marauders on Sunday at 2pm. Queen's is undefeated in their first three games of the season, while McMaster is has won all four of their games this year. Last weekend, the Gaels played at Brock's homecoming, winning a tight match 24-17. The Gaels broke through Brock defense with point scorers Kainoa Lloyd (Mississauga, Ont.), Brendan Sloan (Peterborough, Ont.) and David Worsley (Vancouver). The Badgers fought back, scoring two tries and a conversion, but could not catch the Gaels. Queen's will play another tough opponent this weekend in Hamilton.

Rowing: The Gaels are in Ottawa this Sunday for the Head of the Rideau Regatta, with their first race of the season starting at 9am. Last year the women won silver overall and the men received bronze overall at the OUA Championship, so Queen's will be in the medal hunt this weekend.

Women's Hockey: This weekend the Gaels will hit the road, heading down to Boston to play exhibition games against Boston College on Friday at 7pm and Boston University on Saturday at 3pm. With the start of the season just two weeks away, the Gaels are getting a few more games in before the puck drops in the OUA.

Men's Hockey: In preparation for the upcoming season, the Gaels will travel to London to participate in the Western Invitational. They will be playing games against Western at 7pm on Thursday and Waterloo at 4pm on Friday.

Men's Volleyball: This weekend the Gaels head to Waterloo to play two back to back exhibition games against the Waterloo Warriors. Queen's plays Friday at 7pm and Saturday at 2pm.

Women's Volleyball: This weekend the Gaels fly out to Regina to play at the Regina Invitational Tournament. The tournament runs from Thursday until Sunday and the Gaels will go up against the University of Regina, University of Alberta, Grant MacEwan, Winnipeg and the University of Calgary.

Men's Basketball: The Gaels will be playing in an exhibition game at St. Lawrence College on Thursday at 8pm.

Women's Basketball: This week the Gaels will be playing at St. Lawrence College in an exhibition game on Thursday at 6pm.
