TORONTO, Ont. (September 20, 2014) - The No.8 Queen's men's soccer team suffered their first loss of the season after being shutout 1-0 by the No.4 Ryerson Rams.
The Gaels had difficulty generating offence throughout the match as they were limited to three shots on goal. Queen's keeper Maxfield Materne (Toronto) was able to fend off Ryerson's offensive pressure as the game remained tied heading into the second half.Â
Robert Lannan (Port Williams, N.S.) was penalized with the first straight red card of the Gaels season in the 53rd minute, putting Queen's down a man for the rest of the game. The Gaels utilized six different substitutes throughout the match as they looked to create a spark that would result in scoring opportunities. However, Ryerson's defence continued to dominate, only surrendering a single shot against in the second half. Eventually, the Rams were able to break the tie in the 83rd minute of play on header by Jamie Baker at the far post, earning Ryerson the 1-0 victory.Â
The Gaels (5-1-1) will look to put their first loss behind them when they return to action Sunday afternoon in Toronto to battle the Varsity Blues (3-2-1).Â
