Gaels lose to No.6 Gryphons 66-0

GUELPH, Ont. (September 20, 2014) – The Queen's Gaels (0-4) fell to the No.6 Guelph Gryphons (3-1) 66-0 on Saturday afternoon in Guelph.

Guelph put up 32 points in the opening half and Queen's was unable to get themselves back into the game. The Gaels were led by Derek Wiggan (Toronto) who finished with five solo tackles all coming for losses, two sacks and a fumble recovery.

The Gryphons were led by Jazz Lindsey and Robert Farquharson who combined for 213 yards rushing. Lindsey rushed for two and threw for three scores while Farquharson added one on the ground.

In the first quarter the Gryphons opened the scoring when they had to settle for a field goal after taking back-to-back penalties while in the Gaels end. Queen's marched down the field themselves and looked to respond with a field goal of their own but a botched snap forced a Gaels turnover.

Lindsey and Farquharson marched Guelph down the field and Lindsey finished off the play rushing for an 11 yard score to go up 10-0.

The Gaels looked to respond and Billy McPhee (Burlington, Ont.) made his way through Guelph tackles to mid-field on a big play for the Gaels to gain nine yards. A third down fake-punt rush put Queen's into Guelph territory but they were then forced to punt on third and long shortly after.

The Gryphons closed the quarter with another Lindsey rushing touchdown.

Queen's looked to get some momentum going in the second and Alex Zuyls (Toronto) hauled in a 22 yard pass for the Gaels but once again the team was forced to punt after Guelph was able to get to Gaels quarterback McPhee.

Guelph closed out the half with 15 more points to hold a 32-0 lead.

In the second half Guelph scored twice early in the third quarter and added twenty more points the rest of the way to shutout the Gaels 66-0.

First-year quarterback Nate Hobbs (Mississauga, Ont.) saw action late in the game and finished with two completions for 15 yards.

The shutout marks the first time since 2005 that the Gaels have been unable to put point on the board in a game.

The Gaels return to action next Saturday when they travel to Hamilton to take on the McMaster Marauders at 1pm.
