Gaels This Week - Football and Soccer start off their seasons on the road

The Queen's Gaels are in action on numerous fronts this weekend. Here's a rundown of when and where to catch your Gaels in action at home or how to follow them on the road!

The Gaels open their 2014 season on the road as they make the trek down the 401 to Windsor to take on the Lancers at 1pm on Labour Day Monday. The Gaels have won six straight games against Windsor, sitting with an overall record of 8-4 against the Lancers. That win total includes last year where the Gaels won in a shootout at Richardson Stadium on September 7th by a score of 49-34.

Queen's will be faced once again with the challenge of stopping fifth year quarterback Austin Kennedy for the Lancers who will do battle with fifth year Gaels quarterback Billy McPhee (Burlington, Ont.). It was McPhee winning the battle through the air last year throwing for a tick under 300 yards and adding three scores through the air but Kennedy used his versatility on the ground, rushing for 122 yards and two touchdowns.

Players such as 2013 CIS All-Canadian Derek Wiggan (Toronto), the CIS leader in both interceptions and interceptions for touchdowns Yann Dika-Balotoken (Toronto), McPhee, third year running back Jesse Andrews (Arnprior, Ont.) and fifth year receiver Alex Carroll (Victoria) provide Queen's with key players in leadership roles throughout the lineup.

The game starts at 1pm and can be seen live on OUA.tv.

#18 Tessier
The women's soccer team will kick-off their OUA regular season on the road as they visit cross-town rivals RMC on Sunday at 7pm. The Gaels will get a boost offensively from Jackie Tessier (Winnipeg) who returns to Queen's for her fifth and final year of eligibility after a year off.  Last year the Gaels finished off a playoff run that included knocking out No.1 Ottawa with a bronze medal finish. Queen's has earned at least a bronze at the OUA level in each of the past five season.

Before they start their OUA regular season schedule Queen's will host Concorida in an exhibition friendly on Wednesday night at 6pm at Richardson Stadium.

Coach Hoefler
The Gaels will begin their 2014 OUA regular season schedule Sunday against RMC which will also be the regular season debut of rookie head coach Christian Hoefler. The Gaels new coach will get his first official CIS game under his belt and has fared well in exhibition play leading the Gaels to a 1-1 record at the Old Four Tournament at Miklas-McCarney field this past weekend. Queen's returns OUA All-Stars midfielder Henry Bloemen (Toronto) and striker Tommy Hong (Oakville, Ont.).

Before the men's team starts off their OUA schedule they will also host Concordia in a friendly at 6pm Wednesday at Miklas-McCarney Field.

Exhibition Games
With training camp well under way for both men's and women's rugby programs each team is competing in a few exhibition games this week. The women welcome McGill and Montreal before hitting the road to visit Guelph while the Men take on Dartmouth in their annual challenge game along with McGill.

Men's and women's soccer close out their exhibition schedule with friendlies against the visiting Concordia Stingers. Each game is slated for 6pm with the women competing at Richardson Stadium and the men at Miklas-McCarney Field.
