St. Catharines, Ont. (November 9, 2014) - Captain Shawna Griffin (Redwood Meadows, Alta.) scored the decisive goal of the afternoon as the women's hockey team defeated the Brock Badgers 4-3 on the road to end a three game losing streak on Sunday.
The Gaels opened the scoring in the first frame on Fiona Lester's (Peterborough, Ont.) second of the season. The Badgers quickly responded as Laura Neu beat Queen's rookie goaltender Claire Warren (Halifax, N.S.) to knot the score.Â
Neu gave Brock their only lead of the game midway through the second period after she tallied her second of the day. The Gaels countered with three unanswered goals from Addi Halladay (North Augusta, Ont.), Amber Sealey (Elora, Ont.) and Griffin, giving Queen's the 4-2 lead after two periods of play.Â
The Badgers were able to cut the deficit in half in the opening minutes of the final frame on a goal from Christina Ieradi, but could not add the equalizer. Final shots for the match totalled 37-33 in favour of Queen's. Lester and Halladay led all skaters with two points apiece.Â
Warren made 30 saves in her first appearance at the CIS level to earn her first career win, while Brock's Emily Kelly registered 33 in the loss.
The No.4 Gaels (6-1-2) return to action Saturday night when they travel to Oshawa, Ontario to take on the UOIT Ridgebacks (5-3-1).
