KINGSTON, Ont. (November 15, 2014) - The No.5 Queen's women's hockey team exploded offensively as they defeated the UOIT Ridgebacks 6-1 Saturday night at the Memorial Centre in Kingston.
The Gaels opened the scoring just over three minutes into the opening frame on a goal from
Fiona Lester (Peterborough, Ont.).
Addi Halladay (North Augusta, Ont.) was credited with the lone assist on Lester's third of the season. Queen's doubled their lead at the halfway point of the period as Lester deposited a one-timer for her second of the evening after receiving a cross-crease pass from
Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.).
Clare McKellar (London, Ont.) added a goal of her own, burying a loose puck in front of the net to put the Gaels ahead 3-0 after twenty minutes.
Queen's put the game out of reach in the final period of play as McKellar deposited a great saucer pass from
Jessica Wakefield (Lucan, Ont.) for her second of the game. Wakefield and Halladay each added a tally of their own as the Gaels went on to earn the 6-1 victory. Final shots for the game totalled 36 to 10 in favour of Queen's.
Shawna Griffin (Redwood Meadows, Alta.), McKellar, Lester and Wakefield led all skaters with three points apiece.
Caitlyn Lahonen (Sharon, Ont.) started in net for the Gaels, earning the nine save victory, while Tori Campbell and Cassie Charette of the Ridgebacks combined for 30 saves in the loss.
The No.5 Gaels (7-1-2) return to action Saturday night when they travel to Waterloo, Ontario to take on the No. 7 Laurier Golden Hawks (5-2-1).
