Win streak moves to four with 3-1 road victory at York

TORONTO (November 29, 2014) - The Queen's women's volleyball team (7-3) extended their win streak to four as they took down the York Lions (4-5) in four sets 3-1 in Toronto on Saturday afternoon with set scores of 25-18, 27-25, 19-25 and 26-24.

Danielle Blumentrath (Burlington, Ont.) finished with 36 assists and Brett Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.) had 16 kills to go along with 20 digs to lead the Gaels on the day while York saw a strong performance from Brittney Hopley who finished with a game high 25.5 points.

In the opening set Blumentrath got the Gaels set on the right path setting three of four points for the Gaels to put them ahead 8-6 early on. After York pulled ahead by two 16-14 at the technical timeout, Queen's rallied and saw a run of five straight points with three kills coming from Brett before she finished the set with another kill giving Queen's a 1-0 lead.

Set number two saw the Gaels once again trailing by two 16-14 at the technical timeout in a back-and-forth set. Trailing 19-16 York mistakes got Queen's back into the match as they took four straight points with three of those four coming off York errors to take a 20-19 lead. On their fourth set point attempt Emilie Normand (Ottawa) put home an ace to give the Gaels a decisive 2-0 advantage taking the set 27-25.

Leading 16-14 in set three this time York rallied to take the set. They came back from a 17-14 deficit by taking seven straight points and finished off the set from there 25-19.

Queen's was in control for much of the fourth set leading throughout the opening of the set but only slightly and carrying that into the technical timeout off a strong block from Niki Slikboer (Seagrave, Ont.) putting the set at 16-13. York took five straight points which included two aces from Kirsten Dillon to go in front 19-17 as they looked to push the match to a fifth set. Queen's battled back thanks to a pair of kills from Shannon Hopkins (North Vancouver, B.C.) and a block by Blumentrath. Blumentrath repeated that feat to close out the match shutting down a Brittney Hopley attack to give the Gaels the set 26-24 and the match 3-1.

Queen's will look to make it five in a row when they visit the Nipissing Lakers tomorrow afternoon at 12 noon in North Bay.
