NORTH BAY, Ont. (November 30, 2014) - The Queen's Gaels (8-3) won their fifth consecutive game beating the Nipissing Lakers (3-7) in straight sets 3-0 on Sunday afternoon with set scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-22.
The Gaels were led by
Niki Slikboer (Seagrave, Ont.) who put up 12 points which included three aces and
Shannon Neville (Cambridge, Ont.) who added 11 points. The Lakers saw a strong performance from Tracy Hammerton who put up 10 points.
The Gaels trailed early on in the opening set but evened the score at 13-13 off of a Laker error. The Gaels put things together late in the set and strung together a run of six straight points finished off by a Slikboer ace to lead 23-18. From there,
Danielle Blumentrath (Burlington, Ont.) set Neville for a pair of kills to take the set 25-21.
The second set had the Gaels out front and in control. They used runs of three and four points to open up a 20-13 advantage and followed up by taking four of the final five points as well to claim the set 25-17.
The Gaels were in control for much of the third set but Nipissing fought back taking six of seven straight points to even the score at 19-19. The Lakers did not hold the lead from that point on and Queen's took the set and the match off an error from Nipissing 25-22.
The Gaels are back in action on January 10 when they host Nipissing at the ARC.
