TORONTO (November 1, 2014) - After winning the first set, the Gaels were defeated 3-1 on the road by Toronto on Saturday night, 18-25, 25-11, 25-21, 25-16.
Queen's took the first set, but a dominant second set from the Varsity Blues allowed Toronto to steal the momentum for the rest of the match. Attacking efficiency was the story throughout, as the 58 of the Varsity Blues 143 total attacks found the floor, while only 31 of the Gaels 141 total attacks resulted in Queen's points.
Shannon Neville (Cambridge, Ont.) was the only Gael to reach double-digit kills, hitting a game-high 18 balls to the floor and digging 10 Toronto attacks. Rookie setter
Danielle Blumentrath (Burlington, Ont.) started each set for Queen's, making 27 assists and 14 digs. Defensively,
Brett Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.) was tied for the game-high in digs with 24, while libero
Becky Wilson (Pickering, Ont.) recorded 18 digs of her own for the Gaels.
For Toronto, Jennifer Neilson had a strong game, finishing with 17 digs and 16 digs. Caleigh Cruickshank also had a well rounded 14 kills and 16 assists for the Varsity Blues. Toronto libero Denise Wooding tied Hagarty with 24 digs.
The Gaels (2-2) host RMC on Friday at 6pm at the ARC in their next match.
