Rams down Gaels in straight sets

TORONTO (October 31, 2014) - The Queen's Gaels (2-1) were in Toronto on Friday night to take on the Ryerson Rams (3-0) in OUA women's volleyball action at the Mattamy Athletic Centre where the Rams took a convincing 3-0 straight sets win,25-17, 25-15 and 25-22.

The Gaels could not find a way to stop the Rams offensive charge on Friday night in a 3-0 loss. The Gaels were led by Brett Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.) who finished with a team high seven kills on 19 total attacks and adding five digs. The Rams fed off of the combo of,Theanna Vernon, who finished with 13 points and 10 kills on 13 attempts, and,Chelsea Briscoe who chipped in with eight kills, five digs and four blocks.

The Gaels were staying true with the Rams early sitting at 5-5 and then trailing by only two 10-8 after the Gaels strung together a three point run with the help of two kills from Katie Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.). Ryerson pulled ahead however adding six of the next seven point heading into the technical timeout. From there on they took control and won the set 25-17.

After taking a 5-2 advantage early in the second set Queen's stumbled out of the block from there on allowing nine of the next 10 points to the Rams and they could not recover as the Rams played out the set to a 25-15 win.

In the third frame Queen's looked to extend the match and put pressure on Ryerson. Despite trailing 10-3 the Gaels did not let up and got themselves back into the set at 18-18 thanks in large part to Brett who had four of her kills during the Gaels run and Niki Slikboer (Seagrave, Ont.) who blocked the Rams attack multiple times to keep Queen's in the match.,In the end it was the Rams staying the course to hold on for a 25-22 set win to take the match 3-0.

The Gaels are right back at it tomorrow as they visit the Toronto Varsity Blues at 6:00 PM.
