TORONTO (October 31, 2014) - The Queen's Gaels (0-3) lost in striaght sets 25-17, 25-19, 26-24 to the Ryerson Rams (2-1) at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on Friday night in Toronto.
The Gaels were led by
Tyler Scheerhoorn (Belleville, Ont.) who finished with five kills on eight total attacks and a block while the Rams had an impressive performance from Lucas Coleman who finished with 18 points which included 15 kills on 24 total attacks.
In the first set the Rams jumped out to an 11-4 lead on their home court but the Gaels crept back into the game and after a service ace from
Thomas Ellison (Winnipeg) it was 13-9 for the Rams. Ryerson landed four of the next five points and held off the Gaels to take the opening set 25-17.
Queen's kept things closer in the second set as they held the Rams offence in check to start.
Philippe Goyer (Ottawa) got a big block for the Gaels to draw even at 6-6 early in the set. After Coleman put the Rams ahead 17-11 after the technical timout with a kill Queen's rattled off four straight points to bring the match to within two. Ryerson responded in kind however with four straight points of their own and finished off the set with a 25-19 decision.
In the final frame Queen's continued to look for ways to gain momentum and turn the pressure back onto Ryerson. Sloppy serving from the Rams gave Queen's three points early on and they broke out to an 11-5 advantage looking to extend the game. The lead was short lived however as the Rams headed into the technical timout up a point on the Gaels. The two teams went back-and-forth from there on and needed extra points in the set. The Rams took advantage on their 26th point to take the straight set victory.
The Gaels are back in action tomorrow night when they continue their Toronto road trip and take on the Varsity Blues at 8pm.
