1-0 loss to Toronto eliminates Gaels from playoffs

KINGSTON, Ont. (October 26, 2014) - Queen's ended their 2014 season with a 1-0 loss to the Varsity Blues in the OUA quarter-finals on Sunday in Toronto.

Nirun Sivananthan put the Varsity Blues ahead in the 17th minute, forcing the Gaels to play from behind for the majority of the match.

Queen's had their best chance to tie the game in the second half, when a dangerous Toronto play forced the referee to give an indirect free kick to the Gaels inside the penalty box. Queen's was looking for a foul as a Varsity Blues boot came high at Eric Koskins (Richmond Hill, Ont.), which would have resulted in a Gaels penalty kick. Instead, Chris Michael (Ottawa) tapped the ball for Henry Bloemen (Toronto), who couldn't get his shot past the charging six man wall. Michael's chance on the rebound was also blocked by Toronto defenders.

Getting the ball at the top of the box and working his way through a couple Varsity Blues, Andrew Martin (Kingston, Ont.) also had a chance to level the score, but his right-footed strike curled wide of the left post.

Conor Hannigan (Victoria) was the only Gael to register two shots on goal for the tricolour, with Koskins also forcing Toronto's keeper to make a save.

Hanniganand Michael were booked for late tackles in a physical match, while Marco D'Elia (Newmarket, Ont.) picked up a third yellow card for the Gaels for tackling Toronto striker Kilian Elkinson from behind. The Varsity Blues were booked just once, with Dapo Afolayan collecting the caution.

Gaels keeper Maxfield Materne (Toronto) made three saves in the loss, while Rab Bruce-Lockhartalso made three saves to earn the clean sheet for Toronto.

Queen's ended the regular season at 9-2-5 in third place to the Varsity Blues second in the OUA East, and finish 2014 with a 10-3-5 record overall.
