No.3 Gaels Fall to No.7 Guelph 29-21 in OUA semi-final

GUELPH, Ont. (October 18, 2014) - The No.4 Gaels will not be returning to the OUA Championship where they won the title last year. The women lost 29-21 against the No.7 Guelph Gryphons this Saturday in their OUA semi-final.

It was an extremely close and well matched game with constant back and forth action from both teams causing numerous lead changes. Miranda Seifert (Regina) put the first try of the game on the board with a successful conversion giving the Gaels a lead of 7-0. The Gryphons battled back putting down their own try, closing the gap to 7-5. Guelph used their momentum to charge the Gaels defensive line and put down another try with a successful conversion pulling them into the lead. Queen's responded by matching the Gryphons with a try and conversion of their own, claiming the lead once again. Before closing the first half, the Gryphons were able to fit in another try, leading the Gaels 19-14 at half.

Opening the second half, the Gaels pulled ahead of the Gryphons yet again with a try and successful conversion making it 21-19. The Gryphons fought back hard as both teams met head-to-head in centre field, finally Guelph was able to get some leeway to dive on the ball putting down another try and grabbing a 24-21 lead. After battling with the Gaels, the Gryphons were able to widen the gap with another try. The struggle continued as the Gaels grappled to regain their lead but the Gryphons shut down any possibility of a comeback leaving the final score 29-21 for Guelph.

Although the Gaels are out of the running for OUA Championship, they will have a chance to claim the bronze medal on October 25. Their opponent will either be McMaster or Western depending on the results of the other semi-final game this evening at 7:30pm.
