PETERBOROUGH, Ont. (September 8, 2013) -
Andrew Martin (Kingston, Ont.) opened the scoring for the No. 7 Gaels six minutes into their game against the Trent Excalibur Sunday afternoon at Justin Chiu Stadium, where the Gaels went on to win 2-0.
Â
Tommy Hong (Oakville, Ont.) beat his man down the wing and played the ball into the box, where Martin finished the play from six yards out.
Â
Trent found their footing late in the first half and continued to build on their momentum early the second half, forcing the Gaels keeper
Dylan Maxwell (Vancouver) into a few pivotal saves. The Excalibur backline also shut down the Gaels offense during the stretch, largely in part to strong play from Chris Bascelli.
Â
In the later stages of the second half the Queen's offense woke up when
Henry Bloemen (Toronto) had a goal disallowed for being offside. As the game wound down,
Chris Wellsman (Victoria) cut the ball back to the top of the box and found second-half substitute
William Twardek (Ottawa), who knocked the ball off the inside of the post to make it 2-0 in the 75
th minute.
Â
Maxwell finished the game with 10 saves for a clean sheet, while his counterpart David Ellis made four saves in a losing effort.
Â
The Gaels (1-1) are on the road again next week, taking on the Laurentian Voyageurs (2-1) on Saturday and the Nipissing Lakers (1-3) on Sunday. Both games get underway at 2:15pm.
