The Queen's Gaels are in action on numerous fronts this weekend. Here's a rundown of when and where to catch your Gaels in action.
Game of the Week
Women's Rugby: The game of the week features the No. 3 ranked women's rugby team, who look to build on their 3-0 record against the 0-3 University of Toronto Varsity Blues at 1pm Saturday on Nixon Field. Queen's is coming off a 36-5 thumping of the Trent Excalibur, continuing a nine-game winning streak against the Peterborough-based school. The Gaels are led by forward Lauren McEwen (Wasaga Beach, Ont.), who is fifth in OUA scoring with 26 points, and enter this week having outscored their opponents by 66 points. Kayla Roote (Peterborough, Ont.) and Miranda Seifert (Regina, Sask.) also have three tries and 15 points apiece so far this season. Toronto hasn't beaten Queen's since 2004, and the Gaels will look to keep it that way Saturday afternoon.
Other Action
Football: The No. 3 Gaels travel to London, Ontario this week to take on the No. 2 Western Mustangs in a battle of OUA undefeated teams. Last week Queen's was able to knock off the Ottawa Gee-Gees on the road in a 36-21 win. The ground game went to work on a day filled with rain as Jesse Andrews finished with two touchdowns and 92 yards while Ryan Granberg added a score of his own and 74 yards. The No. 2 Mustangs are coming off a 45-24 raod win over Laurier in a game where the Golden Hawks led early. With 2,968 rushing yards in his career, Granberg is now only 32 yards from the 3,000 mark, 47 yards from second on the Gaels all-time list (Larry Mohr sits second with 3,015) and 67 yards away from the programs all-time record of 3,035 rushing yards in a career which is currently held by former Gael Mike Giffin.
Men's Rugby: It's a rematch of last year's OUA title game in this week's men's rugby match-up, as the Gaels travel to London to battle the Western Mustangs at 7pm on Saturday. Queen's took home the title with a 29-18 win. Both squads enter this week with 3-0 records, and are tied for points atop the OUA. Queen's enters the week with seven players in the top 10 for OUA scoring, including Adam McQueen (Canmore, Alta.) with 24 points and Liam Underwood (Toronto) with 21 points, who hold down the number one and number three spots, respectively. The Gaels have 140 points-for, and have yet to be scored on this season, beating the RMC Paladins 30-0 last week.
Women's Soccer: The women's soccer team tied the Ryerson Rams and suffered their first loss of the season to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on the weekend. They enter this weekend ranked No. 5, dropping from the No. 2 spot. Queen's will look to get back to their winning ways with a game against the 0-7-1 Trent Excalibur at 1pm, Sunday, on West Campus. Queen's beat Trent 3-1 earlier this season.
Men's Soccer: Queen's is coming off a 1-1 split this week, having lost to the Ryerson Rams and beaten the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. The Gaels have a short week, as they meet the RMC Paladins for the first time this season, Wednesday at 3pm on the road. The Trent Excalibur will be in town on Saturday, and the Gaels will look to improve their 3-2-1 record, having beaten Trent 2-0 earlier this year. Saturday's game kicks off at 3:15pm on the West Campus Turf Field.
Cross Country: The men's and women's cross country teams meet at the New Balance Vic Matthews Open on Saturday morning at Guelph. The teams are running well this year, with both coming off third-place finishes at the Western Invitational. Victoria Coates (Newmarket, Ont.) won the women's 5km event and Jeff Archer (Kingston, Ont.) managed a second-place finish in the men's 8km.
Men's Hockey: Men's hockey was in action this weekend in London Ontario for the East West Tournament. The Gaels lost a heart breaker on Friday to the Western Mustangs who won the game in shootout. Saturday concluded with Queen's defeating the Waterloo Warriors 2-1 to finish the weekend off with the overall result of 1-1. The Gaels are on the road again to face off against Ottawa on Friday at 7:30pm.
Women's Hockey:Â The women's hockey Queen's Invitational is taking place this weekend from September 27th to the 29th. The Gaels will be hosting Laurier University, St. Francis Xavier and Université de Montréal at the Invista Center. The women will be facing Laurier on Friday at 7:30pm, St.FX on Saturday at 7:30pm and will finish the tournament with a game against Université de Montréal on Sunday at 3:30pm. The women's hockey team is coming off a 0-2 weekend of exhibition games where they lost close games against Concordia and McGill.Â
Men's Basketball: The men's basketball team is back on the court this Friday against St. Lawrence to continue their exhibition play. Tip-off is at St. Lawrence College at 7pm.
Women's Basketball:Â The women's basketball team played their first exhibition game of the year against St. Lawrence College on Sunday, September 22. Queen's came out with the win by outscoring their opponent 78-48. The Gaels are looking to claim another preseason victory as they host UQAM this Sunday at 2pm at the ARC.
Men's Volleyball: Men's volleyball suits up for action in Waterloo this weekend for two exhibition games against the Warriors. The men play on Friday at 8pm and again on Saturday at 2pm.
