Varsity Clubs Update - September 23, 2013

A recap of Varsity Club action from the past week.


Men's Lacrosse
The Queen's men's lacrosse team defeated the Carleton Ravens 15-9 on a rainy homecoming Saturday at Raven's Field. Chris Porter had a great game in net while Brendan Zoehner led the team with 8 points and Nick Weiss contributed a hat trick and 1 assist. Queen's was leading 6-5 at half before they took control of the game in second half outscoring Carleton 9-4. This win leaves Queen's in 2nd place in the CUFLA Eastern Division. 

The Gaels travel to take on Bishop's next Saturday. Their next home game is October 18 at 7pm on North Turf Field.

Women's Ultimate
The Queen's women's ultimate team participated in the Ultimate Steeltown Tournament this past weekend in Hamilton Ontario. The Gaels finished with a record of 3-4 over the two-day event. Queen's lost close battles to MacMaster, Waterloo, Toronto and Western but defeated York on Saturday and Brock twice Sunday.

Fast Pitch
The Gaels fast pitch team was rained out on Saturday postponing their match against the University of Guelph at Garrigan Park. The games resumed on Sunday with two victories against the Universy of Toronto. The Gaels took the first game 12-3 and outscored Toronto 8-1 in the second. Queen's plays Ottawa at Garrigan Park this Friday at 6pm.

Golf M/W
The Gael's men's and women's golf team participated in the University of Western Invitational Golf Tournament on Thursday September 19th.

The women were competing at the Highland Country Club where the Queen's team placed 8th overall with a score of 281. Alex Rawn led the Gaels shooting 89 and tying for 18th individually. Jenn Kates tied for 22nd with an over all score of 93.
On the men's side, the Gaels tied for 10th at St. Thomas Golf Club finishing with a team score of 318. Russell Bowie had an impressive showing finishing 6th individually by shooting a 74. Cameron Lindsay was not far behind with a score of 79. Chris Hemmerich of Guelph placed first overall finishing the day off with a total 71.

Queen's golf heads to Waterloo Ontario this weekend to compete in the Waterloo Invitational and Laurier Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. 

Field Hockey
This past weekend the women's field hockey team traveled to Toronto to play at the Varsity Blues Stadium.

Their first game was against the Guelph Gryphon's. The first half was a well-fought battle between the two teams, with no goals being scored by either team. In the second half the Gaels managed to be the first team to put the ball into the back of the net with the goal being scored by fourth year forward Kara Pouge. With 10 minutes left in the game the Gryphon's gave it one last push scoring three goals. Final score 3-1 for Guelph.

On Sunday morning the girls took on the York Lions taking their second win of the season 4-2. The first goal was scored by 5th year Amber Halcovitch off a short corner ball from 2nd year Lauren Taylor. The second goal came from 4th year defenseman Fiona Downey off another short corner. Then, the third goal was scored by 2nd year Lauren Taylor with a beautiful shot off the top off the circle and the final goal was scored by Amber Halcovitch in the second half with a pass from 1st year Taylor Herrington. The final game of the weekend was played against McGill, with a final score of 0-0. The girls played a great game however could not find the back of the net. They are looking forward their weekend in Guelph where they will face Waterloo and York.
