Gaels This Week - Friday night women's hockey is game of the week

| By:
The Queen's Gaels are in action on numerous fronts this weekend. Here's a rundown of when and where to catch your Gaels in action including the game of the week featuring the defending OUA champion women's hockey team against Nipissing Friday night.

GAME OF THE WEEK
Women's Hockey: The Gaels start the season as the No. 6 team in the nation and will look to bounce back from an overtime loss last weekend against UOIT. Queen's has a pair of games this week including the game of the week against Nipissing at 7:30pm on Friday night at the Memorial Centre. Nipissing sits at 1-1 on the season with a win over Brock and a loss to Guelph. Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) has the lone goal for the Gaels this season coming on the power play in their loss to UOIT and Mel Dodd-Moher (Stittsville, Ont.) stopped 24 of the 26 shots she faced. Queen's will get right back at it on Saturday as they host Laurentian at 7:30pm at the Memorial Centre. It will be the first look for the defending OUA champion Gaels at both Nipissing and Laurentian who enter their first seasons in the OUA.

Football:  The No. 5 Gaels hit the road to take on the Waterloo Warriors after their thrilling OT win at homecoming against Laurier. Aaron Gazendam (Kingston, Ont.) recovered a blocked field goal attempt in overtime and punted the ball into the endzone. After seeing his teammates stay the necessary five yards outside of where the ball landed, Gazendam swooped in and pounced on the ball for the game-winning score. Queen's will look to make it two straight wins in two weeks against Waterloo based opponents this week at Warrior Stadium. The Gaels own a 12-2 career record against the Warriors and have won their last four meetings.

Women's Rugby:  The No. 4 team in the nation enters the OUA quarter-final this week with a matchup against the Trent Excalibur at 6pm on Friday at Nixon Field. The Gaels capped off their perfect season with a 45-12 win over Waterloo on homecoming weekend and locked up first place in the Russell Division. Lauren McEwen finished as the Gaels leading scorer with 54 points on the season which was second in the OUA.

Men's Rugby:  The men's rugby team hits the road as they look to keep their perfect season going. Standing in their way is the Guelph Gryphons who sit at 4-1 on the season. The Gryphons only loss came against the Western Mustangs, a team that fell to the hand off the Gaels as well. The Gaels take on the Gryphons Friday at 6pm.

Men's Hockey: The men's hockey team starts their OUA season on the road on Saturday when they take on the No. 5 Waterloo Warriors Saturday night in Waterloo. Queen's enters the season unranked but did receive four votes in the first CIS Top Ten poll for men's hockey. The new goaltending duo of Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) and Chris Clarke (Fall River, N.S.) has performed well in the pre-season leading the Gaels to a 3-0-2 record including wins over Waterloo and Rochester Institute of Technology of the NCAA.

Cross Country: The women's and men's cross country teams finish up the season with the RSEQ-AUS Interlock Meet in Montreal. The women's team has had the top performer in both the Western Invitational and Guelph Invitational with Victoria Coates and Julie-Anne Staehli winning respectively. This helped the Gaels move up to the No. 2 slot in the nation. The men's team is coming off a sixth place finish at Guelph.

Women's Soccer: The Gaels fell out of the CIS Top Ten for the first time since September 29, 2009. The Gaels had their streak of 36 weeks straight snapped but will look to make their way back in with three games this weekend. The Gaels visit Carleton on Wednesday, No. 10 Toronto on Saturday and Ryerson on Sunday.

Men's Soccer:  The men's soccer team has started to heat up once again and have won three of their last four games with their fourth being a tie. Queen's will look to continue their winning ways as they visit Carleton Wednesday, Toronto Saturday and No. 2 Ryerson Sunday.

Rowing: The Gaels are right back at it this weekend after a strong performance at the Head of the Trent. Queen's travels to St. Catherines for the Brock Invitational on Saturday morning as they look to continue their hot start.

Women's Volleyball:  The Gaels continue their exhibition play as they travel to Montreal for the McGill invitational. Queen's will take on St. Mary's and UQAM to start things off on Friday.

Men's Basketball: The men's basketball team is off to Ottawa for the Jack Donahue Tournament this weekend. The Gaels kick things off against St.FX on Friday then take on McGill Saturday and Ottawa on Sunday.
