McGovern paces Gaels to 50-24 victory over Marauders

KINGSTON, Ont. – Brenden McGovern's (Ottawa, Ont.) 13 points led the Queen's Gaels to a 50-24 win over the McMaster Marauders in OUA men's rugby action today at Nixon Field. The fly half scored half scored one try, kicked four conversions as the Gaels cruised to a victory.

McMaster got the upper hand over the Gaels with a quick penalty goal in the first minutes of play. The Gaels soon gained their footing with James Dent (Toronto,Ont.) scoring the first try for Queen's, and McGovern kicking the successful conversion. Dent scored a second try for the Gaels shortly after, and McGovern followed this with a try of his own, along with a try from Tommy Kirkham (Vancouver, B.C.). McGovern kicked a successful conversion following Kirkham's try.

Dave Worsley (Vancouver, B.C.) scored a try for the Gaels but the Marauders soon put an end to the Gaels scoring run with a try from Cam Stones (Whitby, Ont.) and a conversion from Andrew Ferguson (Mississauga,Ont.) to close out the first half.

With the Gaels entering the second half 29-10 over the Marauders, McMaster made another scoring attempt resulting in a try from Richard Ormrod (Gormley,Ont.)and a conversion from Andrew Ferguson.

The Gaels fought back hoping to create a larger scoring gap between themselves and the Marauders. Jacob Rumball (Scarborough,Ont.) put up a try for Queen's, followed a conversion from McGovern. McMaster's Cam Stones scored his second try of the game while Ferguson kicked his third successful conversion for the Marauders. The Gaels closed out the game with a tries from Brendan Sloane (Peterborough,Ont.) and Matt Gottschling (Oakville, Ont.) and conversions from McGovern and Worsley to bring the Gaels to a 50-24 win over the Marauders.

The Gaels return to action on Friday, as they visit the Guelph Gryphons. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
