Ouellet, Gaels blow out Paladins 7-2 in 27th Carr-Harris Cup

BOX SCORE KINGSTON, Ont. (January 31, 2013) - The Queen's Gaels (10-10-5) captured their sixth consecutive Carr-Harris Cup with a 7-2 win over the RMC Paladins (3-19-2) at the K-Rock Centre on Thursday night in front of a Carr-Harris Cup record 3,122 fans.

Brock Ouellet (Lindsay, Ont.) was named the game MVP for the Gaels finishing with two goals on the night, including the game-winner.

Corey Bureau (Amherstview, Ont.) opened the scoring with a powerplay goal for the Gaels from the left side of the net at 5:18 with an assist from Joseph Luongo (Concord, Ont.) giving Queen's an early 1-0 advantage. This was Bureau's eighth goal of the season as he deflected a point shot from Luongo throught the legs of Paladins netminder Paul Dorsey (Carp, Ont.). The Paladins hit the post just afterwards, but were unable to capitalize on the rebound. At 17:38, Jordan Soquila (Maple RIdge, B.C.) added a 4-on-4 goal for the Gaels giving Queen's a 2-0 lead; Steve Schmidt (Campbell River, B.C.) had the assist. Ouellet added another 4-on-4 goal for the Gaels with 31 seconds remaining in the first period giving Queen's a comfortable 3-0 lead over RMC to end the frame. Ouellet was left wide open in the slot and made no mistake with a wrister top-shelf.

Jordan Mirwaldt (Winnipeg, Man.) scored his sixth goal of the season at the 14:41 mark of the second period putting the Gaels up 4-0; Alexi Pianosi (Halifax, N.S.) and Kelly Jackson (Scarborough, Ont.) had assists. Less than two minutes later at the 16:22 mark of the second period, Bureau added a short handed goal for the Gaels with assists from Stephane Chabot (Rockland, Ont.) and Jackson putting Queen's up 5-0. Bureau broke free down the left wing and fired a shot over the blocker shoulder of Dorsey, giving the Gaels captain his second of the night.

The Gaels scored two more times in the third period; power play goals by Luongo and Ouellet. The Paladins added their first goal of the game at the 9:14 mark of the third period to break up the shuthout for Gaels netminder Riley Whitlock (Calgary); the goal was scored by Brendan Wright (Summerside, P.E.I.). Scott Domenico (Ottawa, Ont.) added a second goal for RMC at 14:03 with assists from Scott McDonald (Halifax, N.S.) and Alexander Pym (Winnipeg, Man.) bringing the game to its final score of 7-2.

Whitlock stopped 17 shots and earned his second straight Carr-Harris win. The Gaels were 3-9 on the power play and the Paladins were 0-6.

This year's attendance was 3,122 which tops out last year's attendance of 2,576. The MVP for the Queen's Gaels was Brock Ouellet and RMC's MVP was Brendan Wright.

"I've played in five Carr-Harris Cup games and we have not lost, so it is a nice way to finish my career," said Ouellet on the game. 

With the win the Gaels secured a playoff spot as they can finish no lower than eighth in the OUA East.

"We were happy to turn it around in this game after last week," said Whitlock on the victory. "We had a lot to play for and wanted to gain some momentum heading into the playoffs."

The Gaels return to action Saturday, February 2, in their last home game of the season as they host the Ottawa Gee-Gees (12-8-4). Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Kingston Memorial Centre.
