BOX SCORE OTTAWA (January 27, 2013) - The Queen's Gaels (11-3) had their nine-game win streak snapped by the No. 7 Ottawa Gee-Gees (15-1) on Sunday who beat the Gaels in straight sets 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-15). The Gaels currently hold down the third spot in the OUA standings while Ottawa remains in first.
The Gaels were led by
Katie Hagarty (Aurora, Ont.) on the day who finished the game with seven kills on 15 attempts for a 0.267 efficiency while adding eight digs and one block assist. Karina Krueger Schwanke (
Blumenau, Brazil) led the way for Ottawa with nine kills, 10 digs and three service aces.
In the first set Queen's got out to a quick start, jumping out to a 4-1 lead after kills from
Katie Neville (Cambridge, Ont.) and
Kelsey Bishop (North Vancouver, B.C.). Ottawa responded with a run of their own, knocking off five straight points to take a 6-4 lead. Ottawa built on their lead from that point, taking a 17-10 advantage before Queen's was able to cut the lead to three trailing 22-19. The Gee-Gees staved off the Gaels surge and closed out the set 25-20.
Ottawa and Queen's battled back-and-forth in set number two with the lead constantly changing hands.
Katie Hagarty and Bishop put the Gaels in front 17-14 with back-to-back kills as they looked to close out the Gee-Gees. Ottawa responded with six straight points before taking the set 25-20 over the Gaels.
The third set saw Queen's get off to a good start with the first three points of the set. The Gaels could not keep the momentum going however, and Ottawa closed out the set and match with a 25-15 win.
The Gaels return home this Saturday where they host the York Lions who currently hold down second place in the OUA. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
