KINGSTON, Ont. – McGill's Katia Clément-Heyda (St. Bruno, Que.) had the game winning goal in a shootout for a 4-3 win over the Gaels in the final game of the Queen's Gaels 2012 Triangular Series at the Invista Centre, Sunday.
The Martlets, the 2012 CIS bronze medallists, took an early lead on their first offensive play of the game when Gabrielle Davidson (Pointe Claire, QC) scored just 43 seconds in. Davidson added another goal at 3:24 mark to put the Martlets up 2-0. The Gaels continued a predominantly defensive game throughout the first period, and the score remained 2-0 at the end of the first period.
The Gaels started the second period with a goal by
Brittany McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) at the 5:47 mark.
Morgan McHaffie (Guelph, Ont.) contributed another goal for the Gaels at the 12:46 mark to tie up the game at 2-2. McGill's Leslie Oles (Beaconsfield, Que.) had a post-faceoff goal at 16:28 to regain the lead 3-2. As the period wound down, the Gaels and Martlets fought hard offensively, but it was the Gaels that prevailed with a goal by
Taryn Pilon (Peterborough, Ont.) in the final 30-seconds of the period, leaving the game tied 3-3 at the end of the second-period.
The two teams remained tied through the third period and overtime, forcing a shootout. Clément-Heyda scored the only goal in the shootout, giving the Martlets the 4-3 victory.
Mel Dodd-Moher (Ottawa, Ont.) had 27 saves for the Gaels. McGill's Taylor Hough (Toronto, Ont.) had 17 saves, while Taylor Salisbury (Surrey, B.C.) added seven saves. Salisbury came into the game at the start of the third period.
McGill finished 2-0 in the triangular series, while Queen's finished 1-0-1. Guelph dropped both their games in the series.
The Gaels return to action Friday, Sept. 28, at 3:00 (Mountain time) as they face the Regina Cougars at the Lethbridge tournament in Lethbridge, Alberta.
